its the IRST drivers. irst(E) drivers, or microsofts standard sata driver do not exhibit said behavior. (or irst prior to version 16 but those require signing to work on current win10).

Either way, your explorer window will take a minute to spin up the drive and function. The pc wide soft-hang for a few seconds is only exhibited with the newer irst drivers though. Thats the no-go for me. Waiting for a drive to spin up is obvious, being unable to use your entire pc for those few seconds is not acceptable. No clue what they changed at the point they did, but it certainly cant provide enough benefit to offset that kind of obnoxiousness.

I use an old 13.x.x.x irst version, custom signed by winraid. They stop the system wide soft hang upon spinup and exhibit marginally better performance than the irste and the microsoft standard.

pick your battle. current irst is fine if you dont sleep your disks. I have too many. they have to sleep. that leaves me with the aforementioned options.

performance wise the difference is marginal so dont let that make your choice for you. For me its more about some ocd tendancy compelling me to "not" use a generic M$ driver, coupled with the fact the irste drivers are actually meant for X99~ boards and not Z370 (even though they still work they are labeled incorrectly and put the driver under storage controllers instead of ide ata/atapi controllers.

that is all plenty to set my ocd-a-roaring :P
