Cannot open System restore - Unexpected error in the property page

I am not able to open the System Restore page. Screenshot:

Prior to this problem, I had some difficulty with AOMEI Backupper. It was not showing my External HDD where I wanted to save the backup. I also noticed that it was functioning erratically. So I uninstalled it, to clean install it again.. Revo Uninstaller had some difficulty in uninstalling it but then I managed to uninstall it . After the uninstall, I wanted to check whether Revo uninstaller had created a system restore point before uninstalling it. It was then I noticed that I cannot open System Restore.
System File checker did not find any integrity violation.

Hi,
It sounds as if you may have some other underlying issue.

Try running
chkdsk c: /scan
from an admin command or Powershell prompt

Then the most straightforward option:

a. Create a new user for test purposes.
b. Log in as that user and check to see if you have the same problem
c. If not, it's specific to your current user profile. Post back.
d. If you do, perform an in-place upgrade repair install which keeps all progs and data and most settings. You need an iso file compatible with and of your current build.

Notice shadow copy. That's a clue and relates to S. restore

Try repair 18 using this free cautious repair tool which guides you through preparatory steps.

Then check both symptoms.

Should I put a checkmark only against Repair Volume Copy Service?

I have since reinstalled AOMEI Backupper. I had taken a system backup with it on 30th Jan 20. Immediately after it I had made a trial restore of only my C: drive using the AOMEI Win PE Rescue flash drive successfully. Should I restore it again?
(I don't have any personal data on C: . Those are all on D: . So nothing to lose if I restore only C:)

The cautious approach is to select only the necessary repair. Note that disk imaging programs also rely on VSS, so that again may point to the same area.

And would you be sure the same problem isn't present in your image?

Reinstalling Aomei Backupper won't fix system service issues of course.

(I don't have any personal data on C: . Those are all on D: . So nothing to lose if I restore only C:)

- great idea and one I use, but you will find that some data is there on C: that you haven't thought of- just not the most obvious.

I shall not be imaging it now or restoring from within the OS. Rather restoring an old image with AOMEI Rescue disk running on WinPE.

In any case I shall try The Tweaking com utility first as a learning experience. and shall report when done. I may take sometime.

OK, I missed your question "And would you be sure the same problem isn't present in your image?" Absolutely sure.

I tried Tweaking,com portable version. When I ran checkdisk on it it found 3 Unindexed files and put those in the lost and found folder. Then as I proceeded with it, it warned me to enter into safe mode. I said ok and and it booted and asked for Pin and then Password. Both were rejected as wrong. ( My MS account PW is the Password ) So couldn't log into safe mode. I tried the repair in the normal mode , but it did not repair eventually and did not restore System Restore.

Then installed it into Windows and tried. Same story. Could not boot into safe mode. Normal mode, it did not repair though it went through all motions and restarted.

I shall now go ahead with restoring with the AOMEI Image taken on 31st Jan. Hope to return soon here.

VSS: Another approach is offered by Macrium, which, like Aomei, uses VSS:

You may just need to check the state of the VSS service:

Make sure that the VSS service isn't disabled

Changing the startup type of the VSS service and rebooting can often resolve issues.

Right click on 'My Computer'.
Select 'Manage'.
Select the 'Services' tree node.
Right click on 'Volume Shadow Copy'
Select Properties
Change the startup type to 'Automatic'
Reboot

Re-register the VSS components

Sometimes re-registering VSS core components can fix errors. Copy the following commands to Notepad and save the file with a ‘.bat’ extension. Run the .bat file by opening a command prompt and entering the .bat file name.

cd /d %windir%\system32
net stop vss
net stop swprv
regsvr32 /s ole32.dll
regsvr32 /s oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 /s vss_ps.dll
vssvc /register
regsvr32 /s /i swprv.dll

Thank you for your elaborate guide on dealing with "Password required for getting into Safe mode" and "VSS restore" . You seem to be a Wikipedia on Windows 10 problems

.And that all in one post should be of help to anyone facing the problem.

Anyway, by the time you posted it, I had already started the AOMEI image restore and had a horrowing time last night. Windows will not boot, it will search for media and declare media not found , Dell will run an online hdd check and report HDD good, in the Reset mode WinRE could not be accessed with the only option to run the Recovery drive ( I have made two recovery drives that would do the factory restore but haven't used it yet

- that will be the last option if all else fails ) , and then Dell Support Assist online OS recovery will start running , (but I know Dell doesn't have online recovery for my Dell Model ) which I will kill with a forced shutdown. And on restart the same will repeat. I tried image restore two or three times each lasting about an hour , but to no avail. Just had two hours sleep last night. When I woke up ,I ran a 31 Jan 20 dated Paragon Whole Disk image restore, and after two hours and 24 minutes, I was back on track, with Windows booting successfully. Did a Sfc scan which corrected some corrupt files . On a second run no integrity violation found. System restore working fine. Disabled fast boot and the checked reagentc which returned enabled message. So I am back in time 11days younger

I think I would be better off saving the registry everyday. ( I create a system restore point every day, and so felt crippled when I lost it)
