    Getchar socket abruptly closing

Yeah. That's what I say. What? I am using windows 10 Home edition version 1511 HP laptop 64 bit 8 gb ram 500 gb hd. I recently reinstalled windows and am experiencing very slow and sometimes incomplete downloads. I checked errors and read that my connection shows "Getchar Socket abruptly closed". I am lost here. I have current updates installed. Have troubleshot everything I can think of. I've run virus scanner. I've updated drivers. I've stopped any unnecessary services. I've uninstalled unused bloatware and programs. I first noticed my page loading time taking longer than before but it's terrible now. I have checked the hd and it checks out. the laptop is only a year old. I have searched online for an answer but it's all been Greek to me so far. I'm the only user so I can't blame anyone for this problem but me. Any helpful advice will be greatly appreciated.

Your version of Windows 10 is from November of 2015, way, way out of date and long out of support.

I suggest you get the latest version of Windows 10 using the Media Creation Tool, which is 1909 18363,476 then do another Clean Install of Windows 10.

    Download Windows 10

Click on the Download Tool Now button. Run MediaCreationTool1909.exe once it's downloaded and follow directions to create a USB flash drive to install from.

Thanks for the fast response. I didn't know it was that old. It's the one HP sent me on the recovery thumb drive. I am 65% finish with downloading the windows updates and the big on I think is 1909 update. Will that be equal to what you said? I don't understand why mine is so old because my laptop is less than two years old. Unsolved mystery I suppose.

Yes, that will be fine. It's the long, hard way to do it but it will hopefully get you there.

Well I was hoping to brag about that 3 hours being worth it but I can't. It is doing the exact same thing. I did a speed test and download is 0.13 and upload is 0.12. I'm lost.Someone must have an idea what to try next.

Run winver from the Run box (Windows key +R), what does it say about the version of Windows 10 you now have?

Do you have another hard drive? If so I would try a Clean Install of the latest version of Windows 10 per post #2. See if that makes a difference.
