Laptop Moving So Slow It Makes a Glacier Appear Fast

Friend has a Toshiba Satellite that was upgraded from 7 to 10 a few years. He tells me that everything had been great until we switched from Daylight Savings to Eastern Standard Time. ??? I Know - Didn't make sense to me either. Says he had to pull the plug and remove the battery to to get it to shut off and that turning it back on only gave him a black screen.

But now that he's at least got it back to the point where it boots and he can log in he gives it to me to see what I can do about the speed.

I've disabled all the Toshiba bloatware, set it to boot into safe mode with networking, run chkdsk /r twice and sfc scannow. I can't find that there's anything wrong with it. I downloaded AdwCleaner onto a thumb drive (it was still downloading on the problem laptop after 2 hours), but it didn't find anything of substance.

I used a disk and went into Troubleshooting and tried a Reset (with keeping all his personal files). After 2 hours it was still at 0%, so I ended the task. When I went into Restore with the disk, he had only 2 restore points, the newest one being Oct 20th. It's been showing me that it is restoring the computer now for 4.5 hours, and I'm going to bed - it's 2:45AM here..

Hi, in what ways is it particularly slow?
How long does it take to boot to the lock screen?

Please post a screenshot of the task manager when it is 'slow', organising columns of interest high to low by clicking on the appropriate column header.
To post a screenshot please use the Insert Image icon above your post.

Please try a clean boot and compare speed.
Again post a screenshot as above.

Please check your disk using e.g. Crystal Diskinfo and post screenshots of the outcome.

How much free space is there on C: ?

Are the page file settings set to default? Post a screenshot.

Please try copying a large file back to the same disk and observe the transfer rate using task manager, Performance, Disk tab.

Boot to Safe Mode- do you see the same slow performance?

    Note: glaciers are speeding up..

Download HD Tune, not Pro. Go to the Error Scan tab, run a full Error Scan, not a Quick Scan. This will take a long time. If all the blocks are Green, then the HDD is in good Health. If any of the blocks are RED then this drive is beginning to fail and it needs to be replaced.

These timings are for Safe Mode with Networking
Press power button - W10 logo displays for 3.5 minutes with the revolving circle of dots
Logo disappears and screen is totally black for 30 seconds
The black screen redisplays the circle of dots for 3 minutes
The dots disappear and just a black screen - 2 minutes
Finally 9 minutes after the power button is pressed we get the Enter Password screen. After entering his password we get the Welcome screen which displays for 1 minute, followed by 1 minute of black screen, then 3 minutes to populate the desktop and taskbar. Even when it finally seems to be finished, we have to wireless connection. I have to manually bring up the networks, click on mine and enter the password. Every time..

As I've indicated, the Toshiba is so slow I cannot reply to this forum using it. All I can do is try to give you information and reply using my own PC. It took me 45 minutes to get a screenshot of taskmgr which I copied to a USB stick, Since then I have managed to initiate Malwarebytes free version. Of course, just when I have a particularly effed up PC is when they decided to unveil a new version of MB (where's the scan for rootkits, Heuristic items?)

Unfortunately I am not able to safely eject my USB drive and cannot shut down the Toshiba since it's actually made it to the last stage (there's apparently only 6 stages now) of the scan. It has detected 123 items but this new, sucky version doesn't let me see what it's found thus far. I'll post a new task manager screenshot when this completes (where's the green progress bar showing how far along it is in a stage?)

Ok, try one simple thing please- try booting to Safe Mode and report performance.
E.g. at the login screen, shift+ left click Restart

If you can get any useful response then, further tests can be performed.

Otherwise I suggest you prepare a live boot disk to boot the PC from, and if that runs reasonably well, you can run tests on the disk.
    E.g. iso from here:
    Toolkit Item: Kyhi’s Rescue Disk – Win10.Guru
and then create a bootable disk using appropriate commands or a utiltity such as Rufus (typical instructions in tutorial 'Clean Install Windows 10' - but using Kyhi's iso file).

Or, you could take the disk out and test it when connected to another PC.

At this point we don't know if there's a disk problem (hardware), some other hardware problem, or a configuration/Windows issue - or something else.

Have been running this in safe mode with networking until just a short time ago. Here is taskmgr in safe mode. Laptop Moving So Slow It Makes a Glacier Appear Fast-taskmgr-safe-w-n.jpg
Since completing the Malwarebytes scan I set the boot back to normal and it IS running a little bit better, but nothing as it was (according to my friend, anyway). Here is a taskmgr in normal mode.

The disk being at 100% is disconcerting (and puzzling since almost nothing is contributing to that 100%. I DO have a Windows 10 disk that I just downloaded from this site, having misplaced the one I downloaded 3-4 years ago. Let me know what else you'd like me to try. I haven't tried the hdtune yet, but I did run 2 chkdsks.

Have downloaded CrystalDiskInfo onto a USB drive which I'll connect to the Toshiba when HDTune completes. That utility (HDTune ) IS taking a very long time. The task spends long periods saying (Not Responding). It's only gone halfway through the first row - 1 red block, 25 green. The hard drive has 579 GB, 520 are free.

Can't get into pagefile settings. I'm going to end HD Tune. Still just the 1 red block

The red block is HD Tune bad block.

Typically several software are ran to determine the status of the drive.

    Testing can be performed overnight.

    Run either of these overnight:
    HD Tune Full error scan
Sea Tools for Windows long generic test

Run HD Tune (free version) (all drives)
    HD Tune website
Post images into the thread for results on these tabs:
    a) Health
    b) Benchmark
    c) Full error scan

    Run Sea Tools for Windows
    long generic test
Post an image of the test result into the thread
    SeaTools for Windows |
    Seagate

How to use SeaTools for Windows | Seagate Support US

Run HD Sentinel: (free or trial edition)
Hard Disk Sentinel - HDD health and temperature monitoring
Hard Disk Sentinel - HDD health and temperature monitoring
Post images of each of these tabs into the thread:
    Overview tab
    Temperature
    SMART
    Disk performance

    Plan to replace the drive:
    Crucial System Scanner | Crucial.com

If possible try to make a backup image (it may fail with an error code)
If it does then move the drive to another computer or hardware enclosure and copy and paste the important users folders.

Your best bet on testing that disk is likely to be, as I suggested, to connect it as a USB disk to a different PC, or to try using a live boot disk (which doesn't require your disk to boot your PC).

If it then proves impossible to complete a test, replace the disk.

I hope you have a full backup- tenforums tirelessly recommends the routine use of disk imaging e.g. Macrium Reflect (free/paid).

Put in a new hard drive and installed Windows 10 from my disk. Put the old drive in a caddy and am copying files to a thumb drive.
