Yes, Chkdsk /f will report an unspecified error (that has nothing to do with the disk being checked) if you try to check an ntfs partition while Controlled Folder Access is turned on. Either turn off Ransomware protection or add Chkdsk.exe to the list of allowed apps. See my thread:

The not enough space problem is ambiguous.
It does not display the location.
In other threads there was lots of free space on C: that was increased from an unallocated area.
The unallocated area was increased.
Neither fixed the "does not have enough space"

It just looks like from chkdsk that there were a bunch of read errors and bad clusters. I wouldn't trust that drive, or at a minimum replace the SATA to USB enclosure.

I agree with you about not trusting the drive.

HP business sells computers with higher end hardware and 3 year warranties.
For logical drive problems (chkdsk findings) they have end users test the drive with HP diagnostics.
The HP diagnostics are similar to Sea Tools for Windows long generic testing.
If drives fail HP diagnostics then they replace the drive under the 3 year warranty.
If the drive does not fail HP diagnostics they have end users clean the drive.
That typically fixes logical drive problems.

Create a bootable Windows 10 iso:

Boot to the windows 10 iso > open the Windows advanced troubleshooting menu on the iso > click command prompt > type these commands (comments are in parenthesis)

bcdedit /enum
bcdedit | find "osdevice"
(note the partition drive letter)
c: dir
d: dir
j: dir

chkdsk /r /v W:
(drive letters may change when using Windows RE)
(change the letter W: to the drive letter that has the folders/files similar to J:)
(reboot as needed)
(running chkdsk in this fashion typically displays ETA)
(plan to run in the evening so that a substantial portion is run overnight)
