If it takes a long time checking for bad block it's often because it's found some and it true to read many times let it run it's course and check report at the end

You used the /R option which checks every sector is readable and, if not, attempts to recover data. Even on a healthy disk this can take a long time, if there are any bad blocks then it can take a very long time.

As a guide, I once used chkdsk /R on an external HDD known to have a few bad blocks, that took over 8 hours (I had to leave it to run over night).

There are two (perhaps three) possibilities.Either the HDD really has a lot of bad sectors and it's too far gone to repair, or Chkdsk is being blocked.

To check the health of the HDD, use something like CrystalDiskInfo to read its S.M.A.R.T. data. Any non-zero value for 'Reallocated sector count' is a bad sign, a high value is a very bad sign. I use the portable apps version.

Another possibility is that Chkdsk is being blocked from working correctly. I have see that 'an unspecified error occurred 6e74667363686b2e' myself....

CHKDSK /F fails with An unspecified error occurred.

The third (and perhaps least likely) possibility is a trivial one. The usb connection may have worked loose and disconnected the drive. That is suggested by the 'disk read error' and '..cannot find the drive specified' when typing G: at the command prompt.

Your Reallocated Sectors Count is 208 (decimal) and there are a further 120 uncorrectable sectors that are pending reallocation. This is usually a sign of a failing drive.

After only 207 hours of use this is surprising, but not unheard of (see 'bathtub curve' here). If the drive is still within warranty I would return it for a replacement.

    Hi there @lse123

Download gparted - it's an iso and create a bootable usb with rufus

this is a stand alone partition manager -- has a similar gui to windows partition managers but is linux based and therefore won't get fazed if there's any errors in the ntfs file system which Windows based programs have difficulty with.

select the partition and use the check facility -- it's far faster (by light years) than any windows utility, free of course and pretty reliable.

get gparted from here : GParted -- A free application for graphically managing disk
    device partitions

get rufus from here : Rufus

    Cheers
