    optimize drive / optane memory

    16 gig m2 ssd optane memory / 1t HD (spinner) /500gig ssd

I was trying to manually optimize the drives and ran into a snag.

D: drive optimize (trimmed) successfully but c drive says optimize not available.

C is coupled with the optane in as a dynamic drive.

    How do I optimize C ?
Turn off optane and do it or some other way?

    Your thoughts are appreciated.

Yes, you need to turn off Optane through the tray icon, or start menu, Optane utility....this will write cached files back to the HHD, then tell you to re start. Once done C: will be available to defrag as normal...then re enable Optane when done.
It is done this way because if you manage to force defrag an Optane enabled drive you could end up with file corruption or even a non booting drive.
It is also best practice to disable Optane to use Macrium etc to image the disk.
All this info you can get from the Intel support forums, Optane and RST sections.

You were correct. Took 45 minutes to defrag (probably because it was the first time)
I also made a new image with Macrium while Optane was off even though I had no
trouble with making images while it was on.
    Better safe than sorry.

    Thanks

The issue with Macrium (other imaging apps are available) is that it cannot backup the Optane module, so you can create images of your accelerated disk without issue, but if you restore to that disk with Optane still enabled the Optane cache and settings will reference files no longer on the disk, or not in the same positions or of different versions.
This could cause system failure when trying to boot the newly imaged drive.
Also remember if restoring an image to the drive you need to allow at least 5Mb of unallocated space at the end of the boot drive for Optane to store its settings.
Macrium will also not image this unallocated space.

Only HDDs (mechanical disk) need to be defragmented.
SSDs, by nature, never needs to be de fragmented. Doesn't improve anything and it turns it's life short.

    Thank you @pejole2125,
Thank you for the valuable info you had given in this thread.

My new Dell Inspiron 3280 AIO also has Intel Optane Memory 16GB + 1TB HDD . I had also noticed that the C: drive (916GB)could not be optimised - it being considered as an SSD. While searching for more information on Intel Optane I luckily bumped into this thread . I am planning to partition my 1TB HDD and the info you have provided is most valuable. Now I know that before decrypting the C: drive for partitioning (resizing the C: drive) I have to disable the Intel Optane to clear the cache ( to put back all data into the HDD) and enable it after encrypting the resized C: drive. Will that be right?
How to Partition bitlocker encrypted System drive C: on my OEM PC?

As far as I am aware Optane will not be affected by Bitlocker being on or off, it is after all a cache system so any critical files would be updated on the cache under normal use regardless. However if you are going to make changes to the drive such as size I would change Bitlocker status first, then disable Optane through the interface, make your changes, re enable Bitlocker and finally enable Optane when all changes are made.
While Bitlocker is off and Optane is disabled, and after you have made changes I would take the opportunity to defrag the hard drive before re enabling Bitlocker and Optane.
Although in theory any changes made while within Windows should not cause issues with Optane being enabled (apart from forcing a defrag) it would be prudent to disable caching to be on the safe side when making significant changes to the disk layout.
I would also scan the Dell user forums for any info that may be relevant before making such changes.
Please make a system image using Macrium or similar software before starting (preferably with Optane disabled) so if you have issues you can return easily to a starting point.
I hope this info is of use to you.
