Just a comment, I try to have double the RAM or more than what Windows' System Requirements calls for [up to the maximum the machine supports] and never worry about how much memory Windows is using and seldom have crashes involving memory. Windows will use what it needs to run things/programs so it usually boils down to third-party software being the biggest problem. An example, this HP 15 Notebook I'm using has 4GB RAM but doing file transfer to NAS drives kept freezing so I plugged in an 8GB SDHC card and activated ReadyBoost, helped mightily, gave the effect of having 12GB RAM.
