    Why windows defrag always running every time i lock my windows ?

    Its weekly by default and this happening everyday, every time i lock the windows. Its made my HDD temp to 45c. And i don't even know if they running defrag or just analyze. It's fine to turn it off ? And by look in the screenshots, is it defraging or just analyze ?

    How are you measuring the temp from the hard drive? That temp is nothing to worry about. There is a long list as to why your hard drive has activity. Modern drives have a computer onboard these days thatrun tasks handed off from the CPU and other chips on the motherboard.

    But this happening every time i lock my windows. I worried about my hdd life. And how about the optimize drive? By looking in the screenshot is it only run analyze or they do run optimize?

    @mikelferdinan -

    If you have the funds, a SSD boot drive will make your computer "shine."

    What AV/FW are you using. Norton?
    When the system is in an idle state, defragmentation tasks like these are generally run by the AV software and can be turned off.

    I am using Avast. And about window defrag. How do i know if defrag running in background? Where i can check it? And its fine to turn off your computer while windows defrag running in background?
    And does windows defrag automatically stop if i am using my computer?

    If a SSD, the OS will determine by algorithms when to defrag. There is a lot of behind the scenes housekeeping that happens the minute that you lock or log off of your computer. There is going to be drive and CPU activity when idle, lock workstation or log off.

    An SSD will not make it “Shine”. It will allow the OS to work how it is as intended with modern Operating Systems. Platter Drives need to just go away. It costs more fir mfg to use Platter drives than SSD’s.

    I'll definitely upgrade to ssd later.
    About this behind the scenes housekeeping, are they automatically stop when you unlock and use your computer ?

    Yes, that can happen depending on what you have been doing, how long you have been on the computer and how long before stopping what you are doing.

    Yes, housekeeping stops once you start using the OS. Some activities can take up to a finish to get to where a endpoint can be set to allow for the OS to remember where to continue when you log out.

    I never leave a system just sitting idle. I always shut it down since housekeeping has become something that can take less than a minute with a properly maintained machine.
