The cbs and dism logs can be altered to start creating new files or you can delete them.
For example you can add the extension .old

Alternatively you can delete all of the files and create new files by running new scannow and restorehealthh commands.

    Also run: Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup

Run SFC Command in Windows 10
Use DISM to Repair Windows 10 Image

It's sobering to think that changing Win10 system-installed Start Menu entries could cause instability
Changing start menu entries will not cause instability in terms of operational functions - say audio glitches, freezes, crashes...

I move and rename things in my start menu, use customised folders, add and delete shortcuts- no issues at all. But I don't fiddle with shortcuts related to standard Windows items (as created when Windows is installed).

That SFC /SCANNOW picks these up is good- it's trying to fix Windows for you- to make sure you have at least what you should have when Windows was installed. It's just niggling to people who want things different to how MS lays them out that it will undo some changes they have made.

Can I suggest you try to differentiate real problems that do need fixing from this?

OK, confusing responses. Original question: "This Win10 Pro 1903 desktop began to display signs of instability. SFC /SCANNOW indicated problems. I ran [recommended DISM and SFC commands]. I thought the problem was fixed. Unfortunately, the error message has returned with later runs of SFC /SCANNOW. The message: 'Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.'"

As stated, signs of instability included programs hanging. There were also (and, as of the last few hours, there are once again) problems of browser tabs not loading. It is confusing to read Dalchina's suggestion that these are not "real problems that do need fixing." Real or not, I would appreciate Dalchina's help in resolving them; but if he feels more needed elsewhere, I won't stand in his way. Honestly, I don't want to waste anyone's time. If my own searches had turned up an answer, I wouldn't have posted a question.

The consensus here appears to be that I may have triggered system instability by moving and deleting system Start Menu items. That may be, but it's puzzling. I've been massively rearranging the Windows (and Linux) Start Menu for quite a few years, including Win10 for the past few years, and (at least in my recollection) haven't previously encountered problems seeming to arise from that effort. Possibly there's something atypical about the present situation, perhaps related somehow to the Defender update mentioned earlier in this thread.

I appreciate zbook's suggestion to start new DISM and CBS logs that may be less voluminous. I'd still be interested in pointers toward websites explaining what to look for in such logs, but possibly the guidance would be too technical for my taste.

Thanks to all for helpful responses. I'm frustrated at the moment. Maybe I'll restore an image and see how the system looked a few days ago.

I certainly can relate to the frustration of Windows 10 when things aren't right.

The problem is so many different things can not be right, a problem made more difficult from a distance and one reason we'll be be asked to provide as much specific information as possible. It's always helpful to update your profile so it's clear what hardware is being used and what's the actual version of Windows 10 that's installed.

This thread's heading of 'Windows Resource Protection Found Corrupt Files' I think pushed this discussion toward what's been for the last 8 weeks a well reported red herring with this Defender Platform Update Hash 'Corruption' that Microsoft has in fact told us is a false positive , and not a real problem. Something to be ignored till it's fixed. The Storage Sense and Disk Clean-up corruption and repair as well seems to be of little consequence other than to raise our SFC blood pressure.

However your CBS.logs only showed evidence of these Microsoft Start Menu shortcuts (*.lnk) being repaired. Links that you've been deleting every hour with a script you said you'd been running for a while now with no issues. Had you been running SFC /SCANNOW on regular basis before this instability? If not they may have always been there with no ill effect.

I would however disable the script for now, while in a process of elimination.

As far as culling the CBS.logs for SFC issues, @zbook in post #11 provided a good tutorial.

    In particular:

    Option 5
    within
Run SFC Command in Windows 10

It helps to just see the things SFC complains about, and provides at least some clues about what's repairable and what's not.

The word 'instability' can mean many different things in Window 10 so hearing some specifics with your note about '....signs of instability included programs hanging and problems of browser tabs not loading.' will be more helpful to those willing to get to the bottom of this.

As far as these instability issues, there are others here more capable of looking more deeply into their cause and most likely will ask for more detailed logs I'm sure. I've found more often than not if I'm willing to provide the evidence there's plenty of detectives here unselfishly willing to help uncover the culprits ;o)

It's good you're keeping image back ups. It's really our best defense against the unexpected that we've learned the hard way to expect.

Points well taken. Thanks for the quick reply. Let me spend some more time spinning my wheels in various directions and see if anything resembling forward motion unfolds.

I have reviewed the preceding entries and have proceeded as advised above:

    1. Open administrative command prompt via Win-R > cmd > Ctrl-Shift-Enter.
    2. Run the following commands, as advised above:
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
    dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup
    dism /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth
    dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth
    dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    sfc /scannow
    chkdsk /scan
The proper sequence for some of those commands wasn't entirely clear. Hopefully this sequence was adequate.
    3. The onscreen results of those commands were as follows:
    Code:
    Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.18362.239]

    4. Although the concern about the Windows Defender hash mismatch seems to have been a red herring, I re-ran the recommended command (as modified):
    Code:
    FINDSTR /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\cbs\cbs.log > "%userprofile%\desktop\sfcdetails.txt"
The resulting sfcdetails.txt file consisted solely of lines of this nature:
    Code:

    5. Excluding highly redundant lines (i.e., lines of the type just cited, substantially blank lines, and lines indicating "Direct SIL provider: Number of files opened"), the contents of CBS.log were as follows:

    6. It appeared that running the commands listed above did delete older contents from CBS.log but did not delete older contents from DISM.log. Starting with the current session -- that is, at the point where I began to enter the commands listed above, after excluding highly redundant lines (i.e., lines indicating "Encountered a servicing provider, performing additional servicing initializations," "Connecting to the provider located at," "Attempting to add the commands from provider," "Succesfully registered commands for the provider," "Finalizing the servicing provider," and "Disconnecting Provider"), the contents of DISM.log were as follows:

I undertook these operations immediately after rebooting. I rebooted because the system was once again displaying signs of instability. Those signs were the same as before: programs performing sluggishly or hanging (e.g., taking 15-30 seconds to close a browser tab, to move to the next image in IrfanView, to copy a file in Explorer). Those problems seemed to persist after closing browsers. In this instance, as before, the diagnostic sequence began with an sfc /scannow message indicating that "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them," where the success was dubious: the system returned to its unstable ways shortly thereafter.

When I started to compose this reply, post-reboot, having done nothing other than run the foregoing commands and enter this information in Firefox (but with the batch file continuing to run hourly, deleting any unwanted Start Menu icons), the system seemed to be running fine -- as it was for most of the several days since my last post here. But by the end of this composition, I noticed that Firefox took ~15 seconds to respond to a click on "Preview Post." At the moment, however, that appears to be an exception: so far, everything else seems to be responding OK.

I'm hoping someone will see signs of trouble in the requested output (above), but I fear it won't be that easy. Thanks, in any event, for the efforts to assist.

The corruption was identified and fixed by the first scannow.
The run of the dism commands were not required to fix scannow problems.
The second scannow did not find any corruption.

It was not necessary to find and evaluate log files when there was no corruption.
Of course log study can be performed.

    Glad to see it sorted.

If there are any future problems where running restorehealth does not fix scannow problems then these are some options:
    1) perform an in place upgrade repair
    2) create regback manually and use it as needed
    3) create backup images and use them as needed

This troubleshooting approach has apparently failed to identify the problem. As indicated, the program unresponsiveness was returning even as I wrote. In the intervening two hours, it has returned to the place where it was when I first posted, several days ago: programs hanging, unresponsiveness (to e.g., mouse clicks), and just now an Explorer crash. As I noted at the outset, sfc /scannow claimed to have resolved the problem and yet had not done so.

It is true that I could do an upgrade repair, system reset, or image restore. I posted the question to find whether there might be a less drastic solution. It is puzzling that the system is having these problems when, as far as I know, I have done nothing different from what I have done in many other installations.

What seems to be needed is a troubleshooting approach that might provide better information on why the system is having these problems. The system seems to function OK after a reboot, but then it seems to go downhill after a short time. There must be a way to find out why.

There are many computer problems that are fixed without an understanding of the cause.
Of course learning the cause and effect is ideal so you can perform preventative maintenance.
