    Slow Lenovo laptop

    Hi,
I am using Windows 10 on a Lenovo ideapad 320 laptop, about a year old.
    AMD E-2 9000 Processor
    4 Gig ram
    64 bit

Seems to be running slow withing Windows itself, have tried running CC Cleaner and scanned for malware and virus, but cannot speed it up.
Any suggestions other than upgrade to a better machine ?

You have a pretty fast laptop. What in particular is it that you think is slow? You can try a Clean Boot by opening msconfig and selecting clean boot to see how fast that is. Startup processes can slow things down to get to a stable desktop that nothing is running in the background startup.

It is slow between tabs/pages, slow to transfer/copy files, slow to perform most tasks Windows related, the Task Manager rarely responds, slow to open on startup and slow to shut down.
When I click on an icon in the task bar like the Edge or Chrome icons it takes ages to respond.

Though you said it was inside Windows, it couldn't hurt to be sure your hardware is up to date (Bios, drivers, etc.)

    "Lenovo System Update"

You can download here, if it's not already installed...

    Lenovo System Update for Windows 10 (32-bit, 64-bit), 8.1 (32-bit, 64-bit), 8 (32-bit, 64-bit), 7 (32-bit, 64-bit) - Desktop, Notebook, Workstation - US

Use Autoruns to check what 3rd party rubbish is being loaded. Do you have a SSD?

    You can improve the laptop.
    - Buy a 120G SSD (~US$ 25) and a HDD caddy (~US$ 5) to install / replace the ODD. Do a Win 10 32bits clean install on the SSD and move (Using Kari tutorial) C:/Users from the SSD to D:/Users on the HDD. You will have the speed of a SSD and the space of a HDD at low cost.
    - Install win10 32bits. Internal graphics and other hardware will use some memory leaving around 2.2 G to the OS, so a 32 bits will run better than a 64 bits OS.
Last week I did it on a friends laptop that was taking almost 4 minutes to boot. It's now taking only 30 seconds and it opens programs at a blink of an eye.

Thanks for all the replies, I am learning a lot from you guys.

I did a 'Fresh start' last night and the machine seems to be running a lot faster now, but now I have to re-install all my Apps.
Thanks again, I will take your advice

Suggestion as to how to make things more robust:

Create a base disk image of what you have now using e.g. Macrium Reflect (free).
    a. Install some programs, make some changes- keep a note as you do.
    b. Check idle resource usage is minimal, all is ok.
    c. Update your disk image (create a differential image)

Repeat a-c until all is configured and installed.

If at any point you have a problem, damage is limited- you can restore the most recent image, or undo most recent changes.

Images also act as a full backup of what's imaged, and allow you to restore your PC even if the imaged disk fails.

In the above problem, no-one asked you to post a screenshot of your task manager to see what your resource usage was. If CPU, disk or RAM usage is high, insufficient free space on C: - all could lead to sluggish response.

See this for a list of tools to test everything from how your machine compares to what could be a resource issue. Huge List of Computer Stress Test Software [Used by Engineers in the Rugged Computing Industry]

I am running Windows 10 Pro x64 on a AMD E4 CPU, 16gb RAM, 250GB SSD. Yes there are going to be some programs that are hogs and some that require more cores on the CPU, better GPU and more RAM.
