Lots of lots of lots disk usage

    Hi

    I have 16gb memory.

    Running applications:
    Delphi xe10.2
    Android + emulator
    eclipse + java
    Firefox
Performance shows around 8gb memory taken.

Still, when moving (back) to eclipse (for example), there is a lot of disk usage (swapping I guess) and eclipse is showing first in disk usage sorting. Sometimes it happens with Android as well. Since there is a lot of free memory, how come it swaps so much? How can I avoid it?
    Thanks

Hi, suggest you find out which process is using disk. Start with the task manager:
Processes tab - arrange disk column high to low.
    Performance tab
    Resource Monitor, Disk

Then there are tools such as Process Explorer which may reveal more.

Look for any unexpected internet activity - uploads or downloads.

To post screenshots of above, please use the Insert Image icon above your post.

Then perform a clean boot for comparison and advise the disk usage when logged in.

I see either Android studio or Eclipse first in the list, when sorting by disk usage when such activity occurs. Makes sense :)

Do you need any screenshots that just show those applications first in the list?

Screenshots can be most helpful. A picture is worth...

Of course, if you can immediately identify it to a particular program, then take it from there.

That's my question, how come I have 16gb memory, 8gb free and still they are swapping like hell?
Is there a setting on the Windows side (or any other side) that can prevent this behavior?

You've presented no evidence that page file use is the issue here... and have you ever changed your page file settings from default?

If it's a question of your system never being able to use half your RAM, that's another matter..

the pagefile size is 24000mb both min and max size.

"You've presented no evidence that page file use is the issue here" - you are right, I'm the novice here asking the experts what can cause the behavior I described (and added my own, non-professional, option).

That's why I've asked for screenshots as above please.... remember, we can't see your screen.

Hi, thanks, lacking your specs, I'll assume it's a hard disk- please advise.. seems to be a 5Tb WD.
    Desktop? Laptop?

The transfer rate is low for 100% usage.

    a. Please check your disk using e.g. HD Tune Health and Error Scan tabs; Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) gives the best text summary on its GUI I know, else Crystal Diskinfo (basic SMART)

    b. Have a look at your services:
    Win key + r, services.msc
    Scroll down and find Superfetch.
Check it is enabled and start is Automatic

If you find you need to enable it, you may need to restart up to 5 times for it to become effective (apparently..)

Conversely, if it is enabled, try disabling it.

    c. Try temporarily disabling search indexing (note, it's shown, which it shouldn't be)

    d. Run
    chkdsk C: /scan
from an admin command or Powershell prompt and post the summary result.

    e. Default page file settings:
Lots of lots of lots disk usage-snap-2019-08-29-15.45.37.png
Try using the default- curiously, this thread reports too large a setting was a problem:
Extremely slow Win10 with constant 100% disk

    Thanks.
