25 million page faults by svchost.exe (Slow PC)

Hi!

Im new on this forum because Im in need of some help about my PC. My PC is now 4 years old, and it suddenly goes a lot slower. It's weird that chrome takes 1 minute to start up while I have these stats.


After following some tutorials, I used "Process Explorer" to find "Page Faults" (I have no clue what page faults are). I have A LOT of them.


After following the tutorial it still isn't fixed. So, now Im here, asking for help.

Page Faults The total number of times that the process accessed an invalid memory page, causing the memory manager fault handler to be invoked. Some reasons for pages being invalid are these: the page is on disk in a page file or a mapped file, first access requires copying or zeroing, and there was illegal access resulting in an access violation.

A page fault isn't a fault, at least not with the conventional meaning. It is a natural part of the way a modern operating system works. There are 2 kinds of page faults, hard and soft. Hard faults require disk access and will significantly impact performance if the numbers are high. Soft page faults are resolved entirely in memory and have much less impact. Soft page faults generally outnumber hard faults by a very wide margin. Task Manager does not show hard faults separately.

The page faults valur shown is just a running total that will continue to rise while Windows is running and tells us nothing about the present situation.

Without further information it is difficult to tell if there is actually anything wrong.

Find out what company manufactured your hard drive. Then go to that company's website and download their hard drive test. Run it. Programs taking a long time to load can be a sign of a failing hard drive. If your hard drive passes then download the free version of Malwarebytes and run that. You might have malware/spyware on your system. That can also slow things down. My bet is a failing hard drive.

Schedule a disk check. Open a CMD window as Administrator and type:
chkdsk c: /f
It will say that the disk is in use and ask if you want to schedule to next start = YES

Reboot. Pay attention on the results, specially bad blocks, bad clusters and bad sectors.

Consider the following steps to increase performance:

1) Update the BIOS to the most recent non-beta BIOS
2) Upgrade the operating system from 1803 to 1903

Welcome to TenForums.

While page faults and hard disk speed may be of some relevance, no one has yet spotted the fact that the CPU is running (well, more like walking) at a mere 0.4GHz. At that speed its a wonder that Windows runs at all. Finding out what is throttling back the CPU clock speed should be the primary objective before looking at anything else.

What CPU do you have? And what speed is it meant to it be running at?

EDIT: The Razer report has that too:

Your CPU is being clocked at one eighth of its design speed, no wonder everything is slow.

Bree, the CPU image could be on low state (no load). My i5 6600k works between 800M and 4.2GHz

Or it could be stuck at a low speed. It's not uncommon, there have been a number of threads where that was the case.
CPU throttle, even on 'high performance' power plan

And I have a laptop that occasionally gets 'stuck' at 0.8GHz when it's capable of 2.1GHz. Only sure-fire cure is to take battery out then press and hold power button before replacing battery and restarting.
