How to repair external hard drive that has errors that need repairing

    Hello,
I scanned my 2 TB external hard drive and it was found to have errors. The box said errors were found and to close the box and repair them. It doesn't say how to do this. This hard drive registers as Drive N on my PC.

I am trying to copy the files on this drive to a new 2 TB drive I just purchased, so I really appreciate any help anyone can provide.

I am new to Windows 10, and don't know the next step.

    Thanks in advance.
    JC

Run HD Tune (free version) (all drives)
    HD Tune website
Post images into the thread for results on these tabs:
    a) Health
    b) Benchmark
    c) Full error scan

    Run Sea Tools for Windows
    long generic test
Post an image of the test result into the thread

Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    chkdsk /r /v
This may take hours to run so plan to run overnight.
Run on all drives using the syntax: chkdsk /r /v C: or chkdsk /r /v D: changing the drive letter to the applicable drive.

    C:\Windows\system32>chkdsk /r /v
The type of the file system is NTFS.
    Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

    Type: Y
    reboot

Use the information in this link to find the chkdsk report in the event viewer. Copy and paste into notepad > save to desktop > post into the thread using one drive or drop box share link:

    scan done

Here are the screenshots from the 3 tests you asked me to do from HD Tune. It shows no errors. Did it check my external hard drive? That is the one my PC said had errors...

There is a log collector used in another forum room.
Run V2 and upload results into this thread:

    BSOD - Posting Instructions

    The drive tested was: ST2000DM008-2FR102

    Test all computer drives.

When available please post chkdsk /r /v results.

There are 2 type of disk errors 1 is the file system which is fixed with chkdsk there is no hardware fault with that. 2 bad sectors or blocks this is a hardware fault and cant be repaired the disk is on its way out. You may have just had file system errors
