Laptop taking forever to open Windows

For the past few days, it takes about 25 minutes for my laptop to boot up and the login page to appear. Once I've logged in, everything is basically okay. I've tried chkdsk /f, running virus checks, going back to previous restore points and disabling unnecessary startup apps, but all to no avail.I'm wondering if the problem might not be caused by a Windows update or something similar. Does anyone know how to solve this?

Are the problems the same or different power on versus reboot?

These are some trial and error steps.
For each report the findings into the thread:

    1) Turn off fast boot:
Turn On or Off Fast Startup in Windows 10

    2) Place the computer in clean boot:
Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 10 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts

    3) Place the computer in safe mode:
Boot into Safe Mode on Windows 10

Also when in normal boot run these commands:
    1) Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    2) sfc /scannow
    3) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    4) chkdsk /scan
    5) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

If this issue has only recently occurred then I would check your Windows Update History to see if any major changes have been forced through

Sorry for not providing an update, but I returned only late yesterday from overseas (where I'd had no internet connection for my PC).

The situation has worsened since my original post. I was attempting to carry out zbook's troubleshooting steps last night, but the laptop froze while on the chkdsk /scan. I will reattempt this today. The sfc /scannow command found some errors which could not be corrected.

Since the lengthy-boot problem began, I've also had issues with the audio service not running, and there being no internet access immediately after booting (I manage to fix these using the relative troubleshooters). This morning all of the Windows apps on my start (News, weather, calendar, Microsoft store etc) are giving me errors ("This app can't open"). I've also had messages telling me that Windows Defender is not running. I've checked the latest windows updates, and a Defender update had failed to install.

I had big problems early in July caused by a Windows Update, and I managed to fix these by doing a system restore. I suspect the same thing has happened again, but this time I couldn't use system restore as the earlier points are no longer present. When I go to Settings, the update history is blank. If I click on Uninstall Updates, the most recent are not displayed; the latest is dated 11 July, before all these problems began.

I'm sure Windows in the culprit, but don't know where to go from here!

Hi, try using a live boot disk- create that, boot your PC from that, and check the disk.
    E.g.
    Toolkit Item: Kyhi’s Rescue Disk – Win10.Guru

When you've downloaded the iso, you need to create a bootable flash drive, for example.

HD Tune is available on that disk- Health and Error scan tabs.

If you are able to open Windows:

There are log collectors used in another forum room.
Run both V2 an DM and upload results into this thread.
    BSOD - Posting Instructions

    1) Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    2) dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth
    3) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    4) sfc /scannow
    5) chkdsk /scan
    6) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

There are alternative options in case troubleshooting does no find and fix the problems.
If there are no restore points or backup images options include reset save files, clean install after backing up files, etc.

I am able to open Windows, and once it's open, my programs and apps seem to run fairly normally. As stated earlier, there are some issues with the audio service not starting after booting, and the internet not always connecting immediately.

The latest development is that I no longer have text descriptions on my desktop, taskbar, and right mouse click menus. This is more or less what happened to me in early July when a previous Windows update created problems. So I have now more or less ascertained that the current problem is also connected to a Windows 10 update.

I thought that the cumulative update 1809 had downloaded and installed correctly, but it appears it has not. Several Microsoft apps are now no longer working, and when I just tried to install 1809 again, I received the error message 0x80072ee7, which is apparently linked to the Microsoft Store. I have now also received a message telling me to update to the Windows 10 version 1903, but I am sure that I won't be able to update until I resolve the Microsoft Store issue.

    Please check your disk.
As you can boot into Windows, you could run a portable version of HD Tune.
    Download Portable HD Tune 2.55

As things keep being corrupted, make sure your disk is sound.

I just tried to install 1809 again
    - do you mean an in-place upgrade repair install? (Logging in and starting setup.exe...?)

This appears to be a rather old (2010?) laptop with various reports of problems of compatibility with Win 10 e.g.
Acer Aspire 5740: how can I install Windows 10 without issues? - Windows Central Forums

    Note the graphics question.

If you have not replaced the disk, even more reason to check it.

Yes, my laptop is quite old; I do intend getting a new one towards the end of the year, but until then I have to keep this one up and running .

The sfc /scannow command revealed that there were some corrupt files which couldn't be fixed. I have attached the Windows Log CBS text document, but don't understand the content well enough to know where the faults are and how they can be corrected.

    Can someone help out here?
