Slow speed in normal mode fast speed in safe mode

    Hi,

I tested my speed (PC connected by Ethernet cable) and a couple of days ago i noticed it had dropped to 20 Mbps (i usually get 60+) so having searched online i found it could be a conflict, a few threads pointed to AMD quick stream so i uninstalled it and it made no difference, i then tried safe mode and could not use it as i couldn't enter my password so searched again and found your excellent guide which helped me sort that problem (anyone having the same problem see link below) in safe mode i got my usual 60+ Mbps (my modem speed is 72 Mbps) so i rebooted and ran the tests again and it was back to 20 Mbps again, i assume this rules out a fault with the network card, cable and modem.
I also tried my laptop on the same Ethernet cable and that gave the full 60 Mbps.

I decided as the PC is a few years old i would take it back to factory settings and hope it would fix the problem which as you can see above it hasn't, has anyone any idea what can be causing this or how i can try to find a solution, thanks in advance.

Open Task manager processes tab click on net work to see if any process are using the network. Move over to performance tab and click on ethernet, This should tell you if your
connection is in use by some programs.
Check to see if one drive/google drive/skype are active and syncing.
Run a Malware and adware program as well Antiviral scan

    Thanks for the quick reply.

Under processes there is only Nitro PDF spool service listed under N (i sorted them alphabetically to make it easier to find) do i need to look elsewhere?

There doesn't seem to be anything in performance/Ethernet.

Skype was in the list so i have stopped it, a re-test has not changed the speed.

I am running a full AV scan and will now do a Malware and adware scan and report back.

This will give you a more precise view of what is using the Network.

    TaskManager>Performance>Open Resource Monitor>Network.

All processes doing anything (in or out) are displayed.

Your pic doesn't show the actual activity.... bytes in and out (send/receive).

Could be a virus, or your ISP as throttled there network.

If it was a virus wouldn't it also slow the connection in safe mode -

I have run a quick scan and if found nothing and the anti-malware only found cookies so it looks like its something else that is causing it.

I am now running a full scan just to be sure.

Nothing obvious there to indicate Chrome using your Lenovo LAN is hogging anything. It's barely moving. Sort the Total Bytes column descending to put the most active on top.
