What folders to put on RAMDisk?

    Hi folks
RAMDISKS might be useful these days for some Linux type VM's as Linux systems can run in quite small amounts of RAM.

If you have decent SSD's I doubt if using for Windows folders makes it worth while at all.

remember also that RAM disks aren't persistent - so any changes or whatever you need to copy to a physical disk to save -- same with re-boots so any changes to system you'll need to save again before re-boot.

Photoshop (and Lightroom) work perfectly OK if scratch areas are defined on SSD's --even if using Photoshop in a Virtual Machine -- better to have the scratch areas on a separate SSD to the main OS but with decent SSD's these days I doubt if Photoshop really has any performance worries --even if using loads of "Layers" and quite big RAW / TIFF / PSD files.

    Cheers

I don't put that many gigs on my RAM drive because I don't want it taking forever for the RAM drive image on the local drive to get copied into RAM. I have about 10 gigs worth of programs and my computer barely takes that much time to copy 10 gigs. The learning curve was pretty steep.

I also thought copying the disk image would be unbearably long at startup and shutdown but I barely notice it. On the other hand, when you keep opening and closing documents, you do start to notice the increase in speed. Everything is instantaneous.

I do agree with you and others that there is the reliability issue of the data. Most of the RAM drive programs are all very old so they aren't exactly solid programming. Actually, OSFMount "felt" solid. But, I'm using SoftPerfect and the program seems very glitchy. It must be like a 100 years old. I wish that OSFMount was automated and I would definitely pay for it.

In any case, I don't have anything important on the RAM drives. Just the installed programs themselves. And, a few cache folders.

I really love the speed for my previous slow programs that used to take some time to open. Now, I click a document to open a program and it's open in less than a second.

What I never understand is why so many experienced members here say that RAM Disks do nothing and should be avoided. Always worked for me. Maybe it's poor configuration on their part.

    Hi,
    Depends on the hardware used.
Ramdisk can do good things for benchmarks generally, I've never bothered with it seeing most vulnerabilities are memory leaks or point of attacks plus really don't want to tie up memory from being available.

People always said to me: Use SSD instead of HDD, it is faster, even though SSD only improves loading times not performance. The same people say: Do not use ~20 times faster RAMdisk, it is not worth it.

Personally I'd keep an eye on RAMdisk memory usage and adjust the size to what is really needed. Then disable prefetch and superfetch.

RAMdisk will use whatever memory is allocated to it. Typically it doesn't need to be large maybe 0.5 GB is okay unless using it for browser's cache in which case it needs to be bigger.

    Hi,
Saying for win-10 is always "Modern" so I'll use that and say modern systems really don't need ramdisk

    @CerebralFreeze

Best Free backup and recovery software and free ramdisk and partitin manager for windows 10,8,7,vista,xp - QILING Disk Master Free

I also tried the above. Can be persistent and can automatically set current temp dir to ramdisk.

FYI: Left me with a non booting system I think because of it's driver.

Uninstalled in Safe Mode and no problem.

I really loved IMFMount. SoftPerfect is fine but it seems to "sputter" sometimes. Like it goes really fast, then waits half a millisecond, and then finishes. It's still lightning fast but it doesn't seem "solid". I don't know how to explain it.

IMFMount doesn't have that feeling. Everything seems to work well and I feel like there is no chance of any error happening. Like a Honda CRV vs a Jeep. The Jeep looks nice and it works well but it breaks down occasionally. The CRV is steady as a rock.

However, the fact that IMFMount can't autoboot an image is huge con. Also, saving an image regularly and shutthing down after creating an image is a big drawback. I guess that a pro can easily program something to fix that but I don't think there are enough people into RAM drives to program something. And, I don't think IMFMount's company really cares about this software at all since it's one of their few free programs.
