    @zbook

    In regard to :
    "Addendum:

    The scannow problem may be related to windows defender updates:"

    I supect that. My son computer got all sort of issue after the update you posted about.

    He was forced to upgrade to 1903 to solve several issues. Still unable to get the computer to show the motherboard splah screen before starting windows.

    So considering that 2 out of three scan come out positive, I may wait a while before using windows repair tool.

    @zbook

    After another set of running DISM scan and running sfc, problem seems solved.

    I did nothing different from previous several attempts.

    Anyway thank you very much, to @ThrashZone too.

    That's great news.
    You are welcome.

    An extra layer of protection / safety is to make a backup image.
    There are free and pay versions depending on the desired features.
    (Acronis, Aoemi, EaseUS, Macrium, Paragon, etc.)

    Macrium is widely used in Ten Forums:

    Despite having one terrabite extra harddrive totally empty, everytime I try to back up either with Windows or Paragon i get the warning : not enough free space. On an external empty hard drive yield the same result.
    I gave up long time back to work it out. I just back up all my important files, docs etc. manually on external hd frequently updating it.
    In case of serious trouble I perform a clean windows installation and fool around for one day to get up to scratch. Did it many time, I know it is silly and not really smart but in Italy there is a say "Who has no brain has legs" that is me. Luckily I still have good legs he he.

    There is a Ten Forums forum for backup and restore.

    Consider opening a thread to troubleshoot:

    Same here after some update yesterday. Running both sfc and dism seemed to have fixed the issue.

    Your diagram shows that you made mistakes in entering the path to cbs.log. You left out the \ in the path so it was looking for the wrong filename in the wrong place.
