    Slow loading folders

I started experiencing slow folder loading, up to 10+ seconds, some time ago, perhaps a month or two. Maybe after a windows update. I can't remember for sure, but no system changes were made around that time except for those made by WU.

A good example where there is no good reason for this to be happening is my Start menu directory, which contains nothing but shortcuts

I tried the conventional approach for most folders, changing the customize tab to "General Items", including sub folders, but It doesn't help. Also, choosing the "subfolders" options does not carry over to the "customize" options for those subfolders, which I guess at this point doesn't matter because the "general Items" tweak is not effective, but I thought I"d mention it.

Not to mention the fact that the C:\ drive does not even have a "customize" tab in properties.

I just did a fresh install, and it's still a problem, with virtually nothing added to the added to the system.

    FYI:

Change Folder Template in Windows 10

    See Option 3 Step 3

Also apply Option 2 to set Libraries to General Items. You'd have to modify each Library in turn.

    Additionally give this a try:

    Download Thumbnail Database Cleaner 1.2.0.0

You'd need to reboot after running the program.

    Hi,

Nothing has changed. I've changed the icons for a bunch of the shortcuts on the start menu. These customs icons all reside in a common folder.

Could thjs be related to the thumbnail thing somehow? Perhaps it has something to do with them having to be reloaded every time the folders with these problems are opened.

Winaero has this setting "Keep Thumbnail Cache". I'm wondering what the countering effects theses two things have. Sorry, I'm grasping at straws at his point.

That setting is for people who keep huge amounts of images in folders like pro photographers who insist on using Explorer as a thumbnail viewer. Folders containing images would be slower to load if the thumbnail cache gets rebuilt.

I was wondering if you had corrupt media files (image or video including thumbnails) in any folder(s) so suggested that software to delete cache although there are other ways to do it. However if the original file is corrupt you'd get the same problem.

    See posts 16 / 17 here:

SSD is Slow to Open Certain Folders

    Then consider:

You can use JPG Cleaner to remove corrupt jpg files:

    Rainbow Software - Programs

    Slow loading folders-jpg-cleaner.jpg

If you've got video files try getting this:

    BabelSoft / 博语软件

It allows Explorer to show thumbnails for most types of video files including .flv

Browse folders containing video and set folder view to "medium icons" temporarily. Delete any file where no thumbnail is displayed or else move it to an external drive or thumb drive and disconnect that drive. Reboot.

Also when you've finished using your computer run this command (it will take a while)

    chkdsk C: /F /R

    include the spaces.

Regarding Start Menu - I don't use it at all. I have a third party software replacement. However you could try running the Start Menu Troubleshooter.

Start Menu Troubleshooter in Windows 10

I'm not sure that it will find any problem but you could try it.
