100% disk usage in Windows 10. Help?

Hello! I just upgraded to Windows 10 from 8.1 and realized that this disk issue hasn't been fixed. I had some problems with it in 8.1, so this issue is technically a continued one.

Whenever I turn my laptop on, it always runs between 95-100% disk. If I do a quick defrag (takes about 5 minutes), the disk issue goes away; however, I have to do it every time I turn my computer on, or else the issue comes back. What should I do for a more permanent fix? I don't like constantly defragging my computer, since I usually turn it on and off multiple times a day.

Thanks in advance for any help! I wasn't sure where to post this, so I hope I'm in the right place.

There are 2 solutions in this thread that might apply, here is the one I might try first, after making sure your drive is de-fragmented.

I had this same problem, my lenovo laptop would be left idle for ~15 minutes then come back, 100% disk usage but not tagged to any process.

The issue was a scheduled task to defrag.
Open Task Scheduler -> Microsoft -> Windows -> Defrag
    Disable or delete the task.
    Hope this helps someone else.
I thought it was hard disk issue as the computer would be unusable without restarting using the power button.

I have the same issue; I've disabled defrag (I have an SSD, it shouldn't be trying to defrag it anyway), I've disabled the Windows Search service, and I've disabled superfetch. I've also modified the page file to be a constant 16GB (my RAM size) instead of variable. I still get a 100% HDD spike every 5-10 minutes; nothing on the task manager is being shown as using more than 0.1 MB/s of HDD access.

Any other help would be appreciated.

I noticed this issue on my Dell 17r 5737 laptop. On bootup and for a few minutes 100% disk usage. Then it would calm down. I discovered this was caused by a few programs. If you have OneDrive, Google Drive or Picasa, they will do this while syncing your files to the cloud storage. Malware Bytes also does this for a few minutes after bootup.

No, this is after boot-up; the task manager will peg the HDD usage at 100% but no listed processes are using the HDD. It happens at random while I'm using my machine; not just at boot-up.

I've updated my firmware on my SSD (Crucial RealSSD C300 256GB) and I'll see if it happens again tonight when I get home from work.

If Norton 360 or Norton Security suddenly goes to 100% disc usage every thirty days, it is because by default an automatic full system scan is taking place. After a year of talking to Norton support I finally figured this out myself. On Norton Security, go to Settings / Antivirus / Scans and Risks / Full System Scans / Configure /Edit Scan / and click do not run this scan.

Not quite what this thread was about, @Hradcany, but pretty much common knowledge I think (glad you figured it out, though). If you have virus scan installed, make sure it isn't scanning is the first thing you should check :P

In my case, I received no CPU usage info for any processes that were running (you seem to have seen something for Norton). All mine were <0.1% but the total usage (header of column) showed 100% and column was outlined in red. Updating my SSD's firmware was the fix for me.
