100% disk usage in Windows 10. Help?

    Well thanks for all the help but I'm still not out of the woods. Not so bad but still getting the odd 100% blip especially on startup. I think I've covered just about every suggestion apart from a Windows reload which I am reluctant to do because of the hassle of recreating all of my apps.

    just for the record my problems were due to a deteriorating HD which in the end crashed completely.

    Yeah, I was thinking about that. Maybe there would have been some indicators of a failing hard drive in Event Viewer?

    I was also wondering if anyone had created a good tutorial here, on using Performance Monitor, creating some counters or a trace, to monitor which processes were using the disk a lot at startup ?

    I've been meaning to do something about my laptop's performance on boot for a while but I've just been too busy to really analyse what's going on at startup. It's just the first 2 minutes after startup, but disk usage is 100%. I'm only using Windows Defender and I haven't installed many programs yet, the laptop's only a few months old, fairly standard setup.
