Like Windows Update for instance. Check to see if you are getting updates from "multiple sources". Uncheck that.

windows 10 up from windows 7

First; I have another laptop the was manufactured with W10 and only windows 10; it works great and has zero/none of these or any other problems I have read about concerning windows 10. For me logic says that the problems are ALL in the update to windows 10 machines. On my update to laptop, I have the same problem and is escalating. W 10 up from W7; 100% disk usage when it feels like it. I am running Norton Internet security with back up, and have defender and it aps turned off; I have done all that I have read here and more; ( disabled per fetch and supper fetch; reset their values to 1 via Regedit, (1 = applicationsonly, 2 = boot files only, 3 = enabled, 0 = disabled -); Virtual memory size to custom; turned off ‘show me tips about windows’; did in various combinations; etc. NOW when I try to start 'control panel' all items in the task bar disappear and I am almost in lock-up. IF I get control panel to operate, I will try to revert to W7, unless some miracle comes out of MS in the mean time??

Try this... go to Task Manager / Process. Under the background processes in the memory column look for one that is using memory and is highlighted orange. Mine was VProtect Application which was a toolbar app for my add on antivirus. It only used 20-70 mb of memory, but was accessing the hard drive the whole time. If it is that, go to startup section of the Task Manager and disable it. I had disabled the tool bar in msconfig/services by deselecting it, but it still tries to run this. Once I disabled it, it ran fine. If it isn't VProtect Application, Google the one that you have that seems to be in orange. It is not a Windows bug, but an added program application. Good luck.

Hello! I just upgraded to Windows 10 from 8.1 and realized that this disk issue hasn't been fixed. I had some problems with it in 8.1, so this issue is technically a continued one.

Whenever I turn my laptop on, it always runs between 95-100% disk. If I do a quick defrag (takes about 5 minutes), the disk issue goes away; however, I have to do it every time I turn my computer on, or else the issue comes back. What should I do for a more permanent fix? I don't like constantly defragging my computer, since I usually turn it on and off multiple times a day.

Thanks in advance for any help! I wasn't sure where to post this, so I hope I'm in the right place.

go to task manager/process in the memory column and see what it highlighted orange. Mine was VProtect Application which was a toolbar app for my add on antivirus. Even though I deselected it in msconfig, it still ran it. Go to Start up on the Task Manager and deselect it. You will see the drive drop drastically. If it isn't VProtect Application, look for the one that is highlited orange under the process/background processes in the memory column. Mine was only using 20-70mb of memory, but was accessing the hard drive the whole time. Not a Windows issue, but a add on program issue. Good luck.

    W10 (with Bootcamp on Mac)

    99-100% hd space used

I run macair with w10 (installed by bootcamp). Upgraded from w7 couple of months ago without probs.

Deleted files, but in no time disk full
Since last week suddenly my hd space is 99-100%. Dit a virus scan (avg) and avg found 1 malware and some other tracking cookies. All files deleted (or quarantained?) > all green checkboxes). But no solution for the problem.

Then disconnected from wifi/connection. Deleted 2gb of files, but agian in no time disk usage 99-100%

I use dropbox and have a camara uploads folder (from my smartphone). I moved a lot of files to another foleder on my phone (a new sd card). Can it be that by syncing Dropbox on my laptop a lot of disk space is used? The share folder is only about 2 gb,but maybe the syncing takes a lot of space? I got an error message from db but that can also be caused by the lack of hd space already of course.

I brought laptop to pc company, but they have only solution to reinstall windows. I hope to fin another solution, becaue installing windows with bootcamp was difficult for me. It's also time consuming because I have to backup all files etc.

I will try options mentioned in this topic, but am also curious if maybe another problem is the cause for the trouble on my laptop. So hope to get more anwers.

    thx!

Windows 10 is pretty sound from what I have experienced. The only problem I have found is that it isn't totally compatible with some of the add on antivirus. Another thing to note; although Windows Defender, from what I read, is not a very strong antivirus and the reason so much of us add secondary antivirus programs, it shuts itself off when you put a different antivirus program so there is no conflict. That, in turn, may or may not effect your automatic updates. I have not checked to see for sure, but was informed when I was online with Microsoft. They could not find this problem either and seemed to have general pre determined answers for everything instead of listening to what I was telling them and actually trouble shooting. I am not a computer genius, but am savvy on looking and using the power of Google to find answers along with just reasoning out what is happening. To get best performances, I always got to msconfig and deselect pretty much anything that doesn't have to do with the computer mfg or microsoft on the start up. I do my cleanups and updates regularly and also look at my task manager to see what is running and adjust the start up on that at times when I feel it is needed. This was odd, but it worked.

Update; Complete resolution via clean install and NO Norton; I discovered buried at the Dell web site that my particular laptop was on a list of machines that Dell said windows 10 upgrade will not work on? Having done everything imaginable, things where not good. Finally I did a clean install wiping out everything on the drive and rebuilt programs and reinstalled documents pics etc. from external HD. Everything was very good. After x amount of time getting things back and up I reinstalled Norton [/B](Internet Security with Backup). The disk usage and processor usage shot up never to come down. Ended up requiring another system restore as Norton removal tool left 'stuff' deep inside and disk usage and all other problems where there. Now after boot, disk runs from 1% to 20% with higher times during scans by windows defender; CPU the same lowered usage. The control panel accessed directly still try-s to exhibit oddities but by going directly to the app it is avoided, I assume this is a manifestation of the Dell incompatibility they talk about BUT is not a real problem.
