Boot time not as quick as expected on Windows 10 with an SSD

I've been struggling to find out the reason why my computer does not boot as fast as it should with an SSD (M.2 NVMe but restricted to PCIe Gen2 x2 speeds). It takes about 25 seconds in total from pressing the power button to reaching the desktop. Previously, I was using a SATA 3 SSD and the performance was identical.

The slow part seems to be during the small loading animation that happens on the black background with the OEM logo. What should I do to diagnose this? I have a feeling Windows is waiting for some of my devices, specifically my Logitech G29 wheel to fully initialize (which it does by calibrating the wheel through turning itself from lock to lock). Once the wheel is done calibrating, Windows immediately moves on to the log-in screen.

Should I do some sort of boot trace?

Task Manager says that the BIOS time is 4.5 seconds. I've already disabled almost all the Startup items, but that shouldn't be what's slowing it down since they don't load until after log-in. It's taking the longest time at the spinning animation. I remember a few years ago my computer used to be able to boot before 1 spin is completed. Now it takes about 6-10 spins before proceeding.

Here is some info I've collected on boot time problems.

Take a boot trace to analyze boot problems

Download and install the Windows ADK, which also contains the Windows Performance Toolkit.

    1. Open a Administrator Command Prompt.
    2. Type: cd "%programfiles(x86)%\Windows Kits\10\Windows Performance Toolkit"
    3. Type the following command to start recording the boot trace:
wpr -start GeneralProfile -start CPU -onoffscenario Boot -onoffresultspath c:\wpr -numiterations 1 -filemode
    4. The results should be in a .etl file under the C:\WPR.

You can also run this via the GUI:
    Start Menu
    ..Programs
    ....Windows Kits
    ......Windows Performance Toolkit
    ........Windows Performance Recorder

You have answered your own question. Why not just remove the G29 controller and it's driver. Maybe update the driver.
There maybe options in the G29 driver/application for this kind of thing.

    Compare with a basic mouse/keyboard.
You won't need the complications of a boot trace analysis.

    Noise

Our laptop boots in 11 seconds (SSD). Try disabling some services and the manufacturer ones. Also, try a new mouse and set the network not to connect automatically. In the BIOS, all MS stuff should be OFF + Virtualization if not in use (no incidence for AMD VT).

We gain two more seconds when disabling, cam, SD card, BT and the BIOS time goes down to 4 seconds with startup page empty = 9 seconds to reach desktop. There is no sound in Linux when disabling the mic.

Under normal conditions, BIOS time is about 5.5 seconds and there is no spinning wheel = 11 seconds. The Windows Boot Manager is set first when dual boot, that removes Grub. Fast startup is default, same for secure boot = ON and CSM = OFF.

We have an external HP mouse that is not affecting boot time. Lastly, we have nothing other than Defender = ON at startup with Ccleaner Pro and Adguard for Windows + Conexant. All other sources of noise is not running with services disabled. See Revo Uninstaller Pro Autorun Manager.

Don't expect miracles with a 4th generation processor.
