sfc /scannow & windows resource protection issue

A few days ago (to be honest, I can't even remember what the issue was now) I was having a problem and tried running the sfc / scannow from the command prompt (admin) and got the message that Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation once it was at 51% completion.

I started looking to see what the problem could be and found information that had me then tried running the check disk from the elevated command prompt and I just left the computer alone. After about 18 hours I looked and my monitor was just showing the Dell icon. I left it alone for a few more hours and nothing so I used the power button and shut down the computer and left it alone for about an hour. I then tried to turn the computer on and it would not go past the Dell icon on the monitor.

I used a little laptop to try and research what the heck the problem was and really could not find anything to actually help.

I had made a recovery disk about 2 years ago (should be making that more frequently) and I do make backups of my computer using Acronis True Image (2016) every few weeks. I also made the acronis recovery media - which states to put the disc in and press F12 (while using a wired keyboard and mouse) and select option 2.

So I installed that disc and restarted the computer and I let it run the scan. The first scan stated that it passed and I selected to run the long scan and it also passed that scan.
The top of that screen stated DELL ePSA Pre-boot System Assessment and shows the
CPU fat at 7732 RPM and highest @ 4358 RPM and low @ 490 RPM
Rear Fan - 901 RPM (high of 2982 rpm and low of 900 rpm)
    Thermals
CPU Thermistor - current 24C (high 40C and Low 21C)
on the bottom of that screen is states Build 4228.6 UEFI ROM

So since it passed both tests, I tried restarting the computer but it still would not load for me.

I tried using the Recovery usb that I had available and hit F12 when the computer started and selected the 2nd item which was UEFI Pny USB

I selected Troubleshoot > advanced options > startup repair but it stated that startup repair could not repair the pc.
I then tried the option for system restore and it stated that there were no restore points created (which seemed odd since I do not have system restore / protection turned on)

I tried running the command prompt to tried bootrec.ext tool (from information I found on line) and then selected to start the pc - still nothing. I thought I would try and run chkdsk /f /r and it stated that it cannot lock the current drive. cannot run disk checking on this volume because it is write protected.

I finally thought that I would try using the backup that I had made last month with the Acronis True Image and the computer is up and running again.

So I then tried to create a new recovery drive and got and error (I wrote it down, but can't find that note now - grrr....) Anyway I then tried again with a new thumb drive and I got the error yet again. I finally gave up and called it a night.

This morning, I thought I would try running sfc /scannow from safe mode but yet again I get the message at 51% complete stating that Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.

I am not sure what the problem is, but would love to know why sfc /scannow will not complete and why when I tried to run the chkdsk on startup all the other problems started and the computer would not load at all.

I am running a Dell XPS 8700 desktop computer that came with Windows 8.1 Home installed on it and I was able to get the free upgrade to Windows 10 Home and have been keeping it up to date.

Any help would be Greatly Appreciated. Thank You

Hi best start by checking your disk.
Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) gives the best instant text report but needs installing.
You can use this portable program
    Download Portable HD Tune 2.55

    Health and Error scan tabs
    and post the result.
To post a screenshot please use the Insert Image icon above your post.

If that passes, then open an admin command or powershell prompt and run
    chkdsk c: /scan
    (This tests only- no repairs)
    and post the result.

What is your Windows build? Win key +r, winver
Sadly the forum does not require this so we have to keep asking...

I did not select the quick scan for the error tab so I am guessing it will take a little while.

forgot to include the information on the build - I do have to install the current update again since the backup I used did not have it installed yet. Version 1803 (OS Build 17134.765) Windows 10 Home

Will await error scan result and chkdsk report.

If those are ok, you have two options: attempt upgrade to 1903, or (probably) an in-place upgrade repair of 1803 if SFC fails. The latter consolidates your position: upgrading to 1903 has a small degree of risk (see reports in News) - esp. if you do it manually using an iso. Your backstop is a current disk image.

The scan is now at about 2/3 of the way through and so far it looks fine. After it is done I will do that scan chkdsk c: /scan from the admin command prompt and get back to you with the results.

this is the result of the error scan. I will now run that other scan. sfc /scannow & windows resource protection issue-image.png

I can make a new/current disk image using Acronis True Image before doing one of the 2 above. I am guessing the in-place upgrade repair might be a better option since there is a degree of risk with upgrading to 1903 right now. I know that the computer is again telling me that I have an update to do : 2019-06 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x64-based Systems (KB4503286)

Before I do that update, I think that it might not be a bad idea to create a new full backup image of the computer (which I usually try to do before I do those updates)

Ok, if you want to do an in-place upgrade repair to fix the sfc problem, you will need an iso for 1803. If you already have one, fine, else you can get one e.g. from heidoc.

I was looking at the discs that I have and 06/2016, 08/2016, 11/2016; and 01/2018 (and that one I did mark as 1709) so it looks like I am going to have to download it from the link that you gave me.

    - - - Updated - - -

I just downloaded that Microsoft Windows and Office ISO Download Tool. I opened it and I noticed that there are options for Windows 7, Windows 7 (august 2018), Windows 8.1, Windows 10, DELL, Insider Preview and Developer as well as an office tab, other, and settings.

Should I select Windows 10 or DELL since this is a DELL computer?

    - - - Updated - - -

okay, I clicked on Windows 10 and there are quite a few editions - which one should I select? Thank You

    - - - Updated - - -

I'm not sure exactly which edition / version I should download and I most definitely don't want to select the incorrect one and make things worse so I will wait to hear back from you before I start the download from the Microsoft Windows and Office ISO Download Tool.

I have looked for the information to do the in-place upgrade repair and found this link Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade which I am guessing are the steps that I will need to follow once I do download the correct edition / version. I have started jotting some information down so that I do this correctly. Now to just find out which option to select.

Again, Thank You So Very Much for all the assistance. I will be logging out for the evening, but will be back tomorrow morning to learn which version / option to select to download.

No, not in this instance, go for Windows 10. The DELL option can download the OEM Dell factory image ISO for a wide range of Dell PCs.

I am running a Dell XPS 8700 desktop computer that came with Windows 8.1 Home

The only OEM Dell ISO for your machine is for Windows 8.1 Core (aka Home) Pro and Home Single Language.
