The Windows 10 1803 .iso file that I downloaded last night is working so I right clicked to mount it and then clicked setup and am at the screen that states install Windows 10 Home and Keep personal files and apps. I did click not right now for the updates. It says that this may take awhile so here goes!

Sounds a lot better- hope you created a disk image (e.g. Macrium Reflect) beforehand, just in case..

I did create an image of the computer, but I don't have Macrium Reflect - I have Acronis True Image instead.

Maybe I should look into the Macrium Reflect software for my images instead.

Anyway, the computer has restarted and all seems to be okay, but after all that I have been trying to do this past week to try and get the computer working properly again, I can't even remember what the exact problem was now. It didn't take as long as I was thinking that it might take.

Are there any scans (aside from the anti-virus, malware and spyware scans) that I should do to make sure that things are now working properly again?

Again, I can't thank you enough for all of your patience and assistance.

Sounds good. Use whichever disk imaging program suits you- Macrium is generally reckoned the most robust, and the commercial version has some interesting features making it very fast, but its GUI is somewhat 'geeky' compared to others.

Now you have 1803, and you have Pro, you need to decide on your upgrade strategy. You can defer feature upgrades for up to 365 days. 1809 is ok, 1903 is reckoned a bit premature by some- for example, there are quite a few people reporting audio crackle after installing it.

Having done the upgrade repair, System Restore (although restoring is unpredictable) will probably be off.

Also, expect a significant Windows update to 1803.

Naturally make sure your AV is up to date.

I didn't think to make sure that system restore was on - will have to do that. Thank You.

I only have the windows 10 home version (could not afford to get the pro version) - I wish that I could have so that I would have access to gpedit. Oh well!

I do make sure to keep my AV up to date all the time.

I wish that I could stop the computer from doing the updates until I am ready. Even with the computer set to a metered connection the darn computer will sometimes show the option to update and shut down or update and restart the computer when I go to shut down at night and no option to simply shut down. I know that right now updates states that "2019-06 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1803 for x64-based Systems (KB4503286)" is pending for download. I have noticed that when those things have appeared in the past, I am fine for awhile and then the computer will only give me the option to update and shut done or update and restart the computer. At least it isn't saying that it is for the version 1903 update.

Will have to make a new recovery disc as well.

Again, I can't thank you enough for all of your assistance and patience with me.

Thanks, your specs under your Avatar seem to show Pro.. as you have Home, when your 1803 is up to date, you will have a new option 'Download and Install' when a feature update is offered until end of life of 1803. Build 1809 would probably be safe. There are flaws in 1903 that affect some.

Active Hours (in Settings) guards against unexpected restarts in the period you set -max 18 hrs in 1809- (MS has made this more intelligent in 1903).

Otherwise you can disable Windows update (search this forum for threads including 'completely' in the title) and use a free 3rd party tool (WUMT) to check for updates manually. With that you can select which updates are then applied or hide them.
Download Sledgehammer (formerly WUMT Wrapper Script) - MajorGeeks

I do have windows 10 Pro on the little lenova thinkpad, but this computer (which is the one I use all the time only has windows 10 home. When I completed the profile it must have been because of an issue I was having with that computer. I will have to go to my profile and update it.

I did download and install the macrium reflect and tried using that for backing up - was curious as to which might be a better program.

However, I am going to have to start a now post / thread since I keep getting a catastrophic failure - retrying without VSS writers.

Hi, before you do, please simply try researching your error message. I think you may well find plenty of suggestions, from Macrium's forum and perhaps from here. This is not a new issue.

From what a few other folks have said, it may be because I still have Acronis installed on the computer and using their uninstaller does not seem to get all traces of it off the computer.

But I did not do a search stating Macrium vss writers so I will try that and see if I can find any more information. Thanks Again

I still have to finish checking out all that information you suggested regarding the Macrium Reflect, but I did find a work around until I have the time to read up on all the information from those links. I went to services.msc and stopped everything that was running in the background that had to do with Acronis and my backup was created without any problems at all.

Again, I can't thank you enough for all your patience and assistance with my problem.
