Why are you running both Firefox and Chrome at the same time? Why having two web browsers (three, counting Edge)? Just use the one you like most. And I would definitely run another check without AVAST and with everything up to date.
I use one for business and the other for personal.

But, so what? I've been using 2 browsers for years on this machine and my desktop without a problem.
Recently, disk is hitting 100% for a LONG time and killing performance.
So, while the problem might be worse because of running too many open browser connections, that's not the problem

But what you are referring to is processes once it has started up, rather than Boot time yes ? Your definition of Boot is different from mine.

A desktop is all round faster and will run those processes much faster than a Laptop.

My Laptop is virtually the same specs as yours so I have seen what you describe.

Each time you startup those processes maybe different, Windows and Applications do a lot of these things occasionally so can be very variable.

The obvious thing to look at first is the settings/configuration of your Firefox Web Browser. 1.3 GB for that is a lot which implies pages with high content are being loaded, preemptively or high content Home pages, something like that.

I no longer have Firefox installed, but I do use the Chrome Browser which you also seem to be using.

You do not have to use Firefox or Avast, those are purely optional, if they give you trouble then you may have to use the uninstall option.

The SYSTEM items probably include things like Pre-fetch indexing etc. You can certainly change indexing to some extent with Windows 10 settings.

Following on from that, I see you are using CCleaner, again this is one I uninstalled years ago. However there are options in CCleaner to 'clean' prefetch files. That is not what you want to do to Windows as it slows the startup as Prefetch files are continually being re-done because CCleaner has been deleting them.
Those files are best left alone as Windows will regenerate those in time anyway. This is more important for a Laptop with a mechanical HDD.
That is matter of configuring CCleaner better, or uninstall it.

A boot trace is not what you want, you already have some quite clear indicators just using the Task Manager.
If you are not going to act on any of these suggestions, then nothing will improve.

Since you are (or were once) using 83% of RAM, you may be seeing the effects of paging. Try shutting memory hogs, eg Firefox at 1.3GB (if only temporarily) and see what happens...

I am now closing tabs I'm not actively using.
It might be helping, but I'm still wondering what my disk throughput should be.
It may be that I've done enough to shorten the time it takes to drop from 100% and I can live with it

It can be 100% the whole time that you use the computer if you are not using a SSD or enough RAM for what you are using the computer for. Get those items pointed out in order and you can also use Systernals Process Explorer to find out memory hog sub-processes. 100% disk use just means that the hard drive is being used how it was intended by the manufacturer.

I don't care if I'm at 100% if it's not impacting my performance. And, having used this laptop for 5 years, it is taking much longer (MUCH longer) to get to the point where I can work.
I've loaded process explorer and I'll see what it might reveal.
