    SSD optimize

I don't know anything about the SSD in my machine. I have Windows optimizer set for monthly as I thought we should do. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Then I read the following and wonder if all this is necessary for the average user to treat the SSD properly?

Things You Must Do When Running an SSD in Windows 10:

Make Sure Your Hardware is Ready for It. ...

    • IDE vs AHCI Mode.
    • Confirm TRIM is Running.
    • Avoid and Disable Disk Defragmenter.
    • Disable Indexing Service/Windows Search.
    • Enable Write Caching for SSDs.
    • and more......

If you right click start, the IDE/ATAPI Controllers under Device Manager will tell you if your drive is running in AHCI mode. It most likely is AHCI or NVMe.

Type fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify in command prompt. If the notify is 0 (zero) TRIM is enabled.

Disk defragmentation should not be used on SSDs because they store data differently in blocks. Windows built-in drive optimizer knows this and it will only enable Garbage Collection and other features that your SSD supports.

The other two I don't know about. Windows 10 is pretty smart when it comes to solid state drives and it will treat it as such automatically without the need of the user doing much of anything.

I entered fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify

There are two entries which have o's but say disabled. Did the prompt you gave disable trim?

    Do you see it.?
Also should Windows native defrag be off or on?

    It should be on.

Post a picture of the Defragment and Optimize screen just to confirm that Windows sees your SSD as a SSD not a HDD.

Out of your list of "things to do" I do none of them - it looks like a list from the very earliest days of SSD when operating system didn't support them and they were seen as extremely fragile and delicate.

The 0 responses to the "fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify" command indicates trim is enabled, as you would want it.

Windows 10 should recognize that you have an SSD and make the appropriate settings, as it apparently has.

I'd leave it at the default 7 days but it doesn't much matter.

The fuller your drive is the more often you want to trim.

    You are welcome.

Don't bother with the other steps (disabling search etc) as they are not required. Windows 10 copes fine with SSD using defaults and you shouldn't be afraid of writing to them these days.
