SSD is 50% consumed with ETL files. How do I free up that space?

My hard drive is in the red. I downloaded Windirstat to see what was going on and found that half my SSD is filled with ETL files. I researched it and found that they are event files that accumulate. I'm not sure if I can upgrade to a larger SSD with this machine. In any event, l shouldn't have to I would think if I can tame this problem. I did look to see if this was a problem and due to the age of the post was advised to start a new thread. baggage1

Have you knowingly been running Microsoft Tracelog?

If so, did your drive fill up with ETL files only after running Tracelog?

Goto settings then storage turn on the remove storage options then click clean up now that will often clear loads of gigs and old files

Where did you find those files? I wanted to check windirstat but I don't see event files or ETL files.

I don't ever recall putting it on here egnatzatsonic. It sounds like a reasonable explanation for filling up space though. I don't use this machine as often as my original 13yr old compaq with win 7 pro, however still learning this OS and have a high learning curve to go.

It's the largest block in Windirstat, stealth2920. Colored blue, with 52gigs of files. String goes: Program Data, Intel, SUR, WILLIAMETTE, inteldata 52.5 GB

WILLAMETTE is a very old Intel Driver Support. Current is QUEENCREEK. I would uninstall that utility, and if needed, go to the Intel site and get the latest for your system.

Old article I found similar to your issue.

I did a clean disk yesterday that netted about 3 GB of free space. I did what you suggested which is the about the same task as clean disk and it will free 78 MB.

I would love to uninstall Williamette, the web page doesn't display clearly enough for me to follow. Not being familiar with event viewer and how it works. More familiar with regedit and msconfig but hesitant with those too.

Is it safe to delete event files? All of them? Now I'm scaring myself...

Not all of them. Some are used by the system as log tracers to keep track of status and other system events. Example, if you were to delete all ETLs associated with Windows Search, it would fail, and the indexes would need to be rebuilt.
