OK, I think I'm narrowing it down. I have the XYPlorer file browser and running around Windows with that is giving me NO slow downs or lags. I'm annoyed that it keeps asking me what program to open up images with (Irfanview) but other than that all is good with using it. I don't want it to become my default though as I'm used to Windows Explorer so now I just need to figure out how to FIX Windows Explorer as I think perhaps there MAY be a corrupt dll or something going on! There are still some lags in selecting things like tabs in Opera browser, which is my default browser. Not a fan of Firefox any more as it just runs so slowly for my needs since it's full on code rewrite. Edge is OK, I use in on occasion...

Hi, So I ended up investing in PCDoctor and ran full on tests. The hardware seems to have passed completely so not sure what's going on with all this.

Something new that's happening now is that I'm getting full on system freezes that cause me to do a hard shut down. So if PCDoctor is telling me that the system hardware is healthy then what could be causing these two system freezes?

Still have an issue with what I THINK may be Explorer having issue when it comes to selecting, drag and drop or invoking anything from a folder to a program shortcut I have on the desktop. When I first boot in my system is lightening fast. After a few seconds I see something flash on the screen, like there is a program that's been invoked and then the trouble starts up. In another forum a member said I could have an infection but according the the virus software (the MS Windows Security) states my system is fine so not sure what else I can do to find out if there is some hidden issue with an infection...

Any help advice or links to things to try would be most welcome.

    Thank you
    Richard

@RAMWolffDid you record the trace with Windows Performance Recorder as I recommend?

No, not yet. I'm still convinced it's an issue with Explorer. Hardware all checked out just fine. I've done a full system scan that's lasted most of the day and is still not completed.

Something that came to mind, do you have the latest Intel RST installed?

They are RAID drivers, but also(something I posted yesterday):
It's not only for RAID, it is an updated/enhanced controller driver. The default MSAHCI driver is dated back to 2006 and it is good as its best for compatibility across thousands of computer but it you want to squeeze every bit of performance out of your SSD you need to install the IRST driver.

    Hi there
a lot of these programs are just snake oil.

There's usually a simple explanation -- assuming you have decent disks (slow disks will kill any system -- even the planets biggest supercomputers !!), an application not in an endless loop and enough memory then what actually happens is that there's a very sophisticated algorithm built into the Windows kernel which builds up some type of data base to get a feel of the typical tasks a user does on the machine.
So if it's say 85% sure that a user will start excel etc during the session then the kernel arranges for a lot of the necessary programs / data / services to be "pre-fetched" or loaded into the computer -- that way the service is available quickly.

A new installation (and of course that applies to a new computer) will take maybe a few days even and certanly a few re-boots to build up its "pre-fetch" database.

So long as you don't have a RAM shortage, aren't trying to run too many tasks at once and have decently fast disks (SSD's much better of course) you are invariably better off just leaving Windows services and settings on their defaults -- obviously adjust graphics etc for the user experience but 99% of those "performance" programs while of interest perhaps to geeks etc don't really improve an average computer very much if at all -- you could have the fastest computer on the planet with 10 TB of RAM in it but if you are accessing a website which takes 10 secs to serve you back your data request -- there's nothing you can do about it (other than go to a different website).

As far as RAID is concerned - usually HOME / CONSUMER grade RAID cards are pretty appalling beasts -- you can improve speed by configuring as RAID 0 -- if you use RAID in mirroring mode then that will slow the system down in any case --- to get acceptable RAID performance on Windows you really do need top notch RAID controllers -- LINUX is far better in this regard as it also implements software RAID (mdadm) which has really good performance even on mediocre-ish disks !!!.

    Cheers

Well I am running Windows 10 Pro 64 bit so not sure if the drivers and what not are better.

I don't know about the RST... how do I go about looking for an update for that if it does need one?

Aside from the couple of system freezes that seem to be Explorer related the system does seem to be smoothing out a bit more as time goes on. Perhaps the pre fetch is just taking a bit longer considering all the high end programs I have installed.

Oh and the full system check that took 10 1/2 hours total came up with zero issues.

Not sure what you mean by snake oil. PCDoctor is regarded pretty highly by pros and home users....

PCDoctor is also considered adware by many. Oranges and pears, I guess.

Ah, well most of my friends in the CG industry use it and love it. Folks need to understand that many in the CG business are sort of brilliant when it comes to computers considering they have to know what's what. I'm more of a old newbie in the CG business and I've not built my own computer in more than a decade so my old brain just doesn't pull up needed "how to" info like it used to.

So I did try to run the Advanced Repair option to fix Explorer File system (Reboot into that area) and the system reported it couldn't fix it so not sure what else to try to get that looked at without reinstalling my entire system.

In the mean time I've thrown a M.2 1 terabyte SSD in my cart so come July if I've still not got this figured out I will reinstall but I'll replace the tiny 13 gig M.2 with that one and install Windows to that as I've heard that really gets much faster boots and programs start and run faster. It's all about the speed.

Well after a long haul I have things just about where I like them. I uninstalled quite a few programs that were getting red flagged by Malwarebytes and other programs. Then came the big May update and it just about cleared the rest of the sluggishness out of the system. I'm happy to report it's just about gold in my book! Thanks for the help!
