DISM and SFC not working.

Hey, everybody. I can't run DISM or SFC on my computer.

When I run Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, it says this:

The DISM log file can be found at C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log

When I run sfc /scannow, it says this.

Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service.

I looked online and I couldn't find any solution on how to fix this. Can you please tell me how to fix this?

Please don't tell me to reformat my computer, buy a new computer, perform a clean boot, refresh my computer, or anything that causes me to lose any of my data.

I also attached my dism.log file.

Please open the Command Prompt by typing cmd.exe into Start Menu, right-click on Cmd.exe, and open it as an administrator. Execute following command to enable "Windows Modules Installer" service.

Try SFC and Dism commands after executing above commands.

I tried using those two commands. Still doesn't work.

a. A clean boot won't cause you to lose data. Do you understand what that is? Simply disabling startups- which can be re-enabled.
b. I take it you do have a full backup, and use disk imaging routinely as is so often urged here. These will help you avoid losing your data etc.

I started Windows Modules Installer and put it on Manual. It still doesn't work.

Update the specs in the "My Computer" section:

In the left corner below in your post you find 'My System Specs'.
After clicking it you can find a link a little below that says 'Update your System Spec', click on this link to get to the page where you can fill in your system specs.

Include PSU. cooler, case, peripherals and anything attached to the computer by wired or wireless (mouse, keyboard, headset, printer, xbox, USB wireless network card, etc.)


Th computer is using 1709 and has failed automatic upgrades.

Find two flash drives that you can format (> or = 8 GB).

Create two Windows 10 iso:
a) Windows 10 1709

Microsoft Windows and Office ISO Download Tool
TechBench by WZT (v4.1.1)

b) Windows 10 1809
Download Windows 10 ISO File | Tutorials
Download Windows 10

Perform an in place upgrade repair with the Windows 1709 iso.

If that is successful it should fix scannow and restorehealth problems.

Then perform an in place upgrade repair with the Windows 1809 iso.

Before performing the in place upgrade repairs:
a) check the drive with HD Sentinel (free or trial version) and chkdsk /r /v
b) place the computer in clean boot

c) uninstall all non-Microsoft antivirus, firewall, and drive encryption software
d) post an image of disk management

e) open device manager > click view > click show hidden devices manually expand all rows > look for any row displaying a yellow triangle with black exclamation mark or unknown device > post images into the thread
f) disconnect all cables for the non-Windows drives or remove the drives from the computer

If there is a successful in place upgrade repair with Windows 1709 but a failure with 1809 then open a thread in the Installation and Upgrade forum with the results of setupdiag:

If all of the above work then you are set.
If all of the above fail then plan a reset save files (save files, install drivers and applications) or reset save files equivalent.

I'm not reformatting my computer or performing a clean boot.

There are two procedures that are extremely different:

They both have clean in the name but are extremely different.

clean install versus clean boot

A clean install should not be performed as it is the method to clean the drive and install a new copy of Windows.
All files, folders, applications, drivers, partitions, etc. are deleted.

Do you mean booting in Safe Mode?

When booting there are multiple options using msconfig:

a) normal boot
b) selective boot
c) clean boot

safe mode
safe mode with networking
safe mode with command prompt

Each of the above can be done by checking a box or selecting a menu item except clean boot.
Clean boot can be performed by following the steps in the Ten Forums or Microsoft links.

An in place upgrade repair cannot be performed in safe mode and can be performed in clean boot.
