    SSD optimize and defrag

There is a place to set optimize and defrag on or off and to schedule if you wish.
However, I have read that Windows does this itself in its own way. So should I turn mine off or leave it set to a month?

If It's properly recognized as SSD, it should say "Optimize" and HDDs would be "Fragmented %". For all practical purposes, Optimize will just invoke Trim command and not classical gefragmentation like with HDDs.

Windows does this itself if you tell it to in Disk defragmenter - C:\Windows\System32\dfrgui.exe

Judging by the words you chose, I think this is what you are looking at. And note that this interface runs the appropriate type of defrag [defrag or optimise/trim] for different types of disk without any action being needed on your part [the button says Optimise whichever disk type is chosen].

So you can just accept the defaults in that interface if you want to [in the diagram, I had chosen to turn scheduled defrags off but I think you want to leave them on].

    defrag ssd

This is how my settings are and unless I have read you all wrong, it should be left hat way and let Windows do its own thing.
    Thank you for your help.

    Maranna:

What have you read to lead you to believe that you shouldn't schedule optimization?

You may be right---I have 2 SSDs that supposedly are set to optimize on a weekly schedule. Apparently neither has been optimized in at least 19 days.

That's right, you can enable auto though, you won't even know when it's run, takes only few seconds and happens at idle times.

Sorry, my 80 year old brain drew the wrong conclusion so on it is for the month.

That is the expected behaviour. See the explanation under the heading Scheduled task in defrag - Microsoft Docs. It trims SSDs monthly even if the Weekly setting has been chosen.

Thanks for that, Denis; just for laughs I changed the scheduled frequency to monthly. We'll see what that accomplishes.
