sorry - I've been busy. I will try on Thursday. I did run cc cleaner and avg found a few viruses and moved them to quarantine. It has been operating at around 49% now so it is a bit better.
also download and run the Speccy tool to determine the full specs of the Dell Optiplex 360 machine (and post a screenshot of Speccy) - need to look at the "Storage" section of Speccy which will show the model # of the hard drive

by the way - SSD = solid state drive < this runs much faster & quieter than standard hard disk drives

Hi, there are many possible causes- noted System is responsible for the high disk usage.

    Also noted you said

    a. Please post a screenshot of your Update History.
    b. How much free space do you have on C: ?

    c. Please boot to Safe Mode. Check your disk usage and post the result.
Hopefully it will then be low.

    d. If so, run
    chkdsk c: /scan
from an admin command or Powershell prompt
and post the result. (Note this is just a test- it fixes nothing).

    e. If this fails, run
    chkdsk c: /f
Your PC will probably need to reboot, and this could take a long time to complete.

To examine how System is using your disk try Process Explorer (free from MS):
    Attachment 229000
pc 100% disc issue - impossibly slow. windows pro 10 on dell optiplex-open-space-c-drive.jpg
pc 100% disc issue - impossibly slow. windows pro 10 on dell optiplex-update-history.jpg

I restarted in safe mode and activated task manager. Unfortunately the only information provided was CPU (0-1%) and MEMORY (15-16%) Did I do something wrong here?

    CHK SCAN:
pc 100% disc issue - impossibly slow. windows pro 10 on dell optiplex-chk-disc-scan.jpg

scan didn't seem to fail so I skipped the next step but I did run the process registry:
pc 100% disc issue - impossibly slow. windows pro 10 on dell optiplex-process-registry.jpg

I think I'm caught up now. I hope you are still with me. sorry it took so long.

Thanks. The first tells me you are installing an update of some kind. Please post a screenshot of your Update History to see if this gives a clue- for example, if an upgrade fails, it repeated downloads and tries to install- which is frustrating.

The second looks puzzling as the disk usage is 100%, but little shown.

The third- service host- needs expansion, and probably a tool like Process Explorer to find out what is actually happening. svchost.exe does many things.

Perhaps the update has now completed - what is your Windows version?
    Win key + r, winver

At least it's not always 100% of anything..

Still waiting for you to address my post #8, which primarily relates to the start of dealing with SFC /SCANNOW failing.

Seems Windows Update is failing and you're on 1803.

Figures sound good- not sure what you were missing without a screenshot.

chkdsk passed. Good. And from Speccy, disk is probably good.

Process explorer- curiously the screenshot shows very low CPU usage... was that in normal or safe mode?
    - this would only be useful if CPU usage were high...

    Noting
the system file checker did say that it found corrupt files and that it was able to fix some but some were not able to be fixed.
and that Windows Update seems to be failing, and that the disk is good, I suggest you try an in-place upgrade repair install.

Alternatively you could attempt to upgrade, but I think for now, try an in-place upgrade repair install.

This keeps all progs, data and most settings.

    Short instructions:
    Download (1803) iso
rt click, click Mount (Mount will not be avaialble if you have associated iso's with another prog)
Open the new drive letter, double click setup.exe, follow the prompts.

I couldn't figure out how to get a screen shot during safe mode that I could then paste in a word doc while in regular mode. It didn't have the column for Disc usage.

You're correct that task manager in S Mode doesn't show disk activity:
pc 100% disc issue - impossibly slow. windows pro 10 on dell optiplex-untitled.png
(I did that using PrtSc, then Paint to crop it and save it as an image file).

Suggest you proceed with an in-place upgrade repair as above.

Have you seen excessive CPU use again?

I suggest you opt NOT to receive updates during that- you can even disconnect your internet if you wish.
