I had to disable Controlled Folder, since it was causing headaches and also layer with EmsiSoft for the main Malware protection.
SO why did you turn "Controlled Folder Access" ON in the first place ? (ie Same question to Bree ?).

I didn’t, one of the updates did in the beginning after May. Some things that MS is pushing security wise are more pointed towards Enterprise and Kiosk. It is making it harder on those who may not understand that these things that MS is pushing, can be the heart of their problems at times.

Because of it's current name - Ransomware Protection. It does exactly what it says on the tin.

When first introduced in 1709 as just 'Controlled folder access' it was turned off by default, which was just as well. It was near impossible to work out what apps had been blocked and needed to be granted access.

The protection hasn't changed since then, but the UI has become far easier to use, to the point where MS decided to turn it on by default when applying a Feature Update (1809 was the first to do that, I think).

It is now described in Windows Security (another name change) as Ransomware Protection, and allowing an app to have access is easy. Just click on 'Recently blocked apps' and pick one from the list. Most apps are already white-listed anyway, but once you have added the few that you want it works unobtrusively in the background. You hardly notice that it's there.

Revisiting this thread to check the current status. Seems in 1909/1903 this chkdsk issue is resolved. It now runs fine with ransomware protection turned on.

Sorry to necro such an old post, but I'm running into the same issue as the OP, but my problem is I'm trying to fix a drive that isn't booting. So I can't go into Windows to change the settings to allow chkdsk to run. Anyone know how I would do this through the command prompt? Using a Windows 10 bootable to try and repair this laptop

    Welcome to Ten Forums.

That isn't really the same problem at all. This thread was specifically abut a problem running chkdsk from within a working windows.

It would probably be best to start a new thread of your own. With your W10 bootable media, boot to a command prompt. From the command prompt, type NOTEPAD then press enter. Now type DISKPART. Then in Diskpart type the commands:

    LIST DISK
(note the disk number of the hard drive and use it in place of # in the next command)
    SELECT DISK #
    LIST PARTITION
    LIST VOLUME

Copy the results, paste into Notepad, then save them to a USB. This will allow you to post the results in your thread, they will help in diagnosis.

I'm having a similar issue and my controlled folder access is off.
But I do have a "protected" Windows Store games folder on that drive, could it be it?

6e74667363686b2e 15bc running Chkdsk /SCAN on K: Drive which is a most likely fake 4TB SSD drive i purchased in Jul for $29 at Walmart....Sold and shipped by Joybuy. I also have a most likely fake 60TB SSD drive i purchased from Walmart (Sold by Joybuy) back in Feb for $49 that gives the same unspecified errors when using the /SCAN switch. I have two other Seagate external drives that have bad sectors according to Hard Drive Sentinel one (1TB) has 968 bad sectors and the other (8TB) has 27602 bad sectors according to the software. Both those Seagate drives are old drives. The 8TB has been replaced by Seagate once before because of bad sectors on that drive while it was under warranty. Neither one of the drives are young enough to have a warranty on them so I will be faced with the cost of buying new drives soon. If I want/need the extra storage.

I know that SSD prices have been dropping, but $29 for a 4TB drive? I strongly suspect that you were the victim of a "fake" storage device as you noted. But, you can test it to find out if this is the case.

The link below includes a link to one such utility. Note that the article is discussing SD Cards, but this holds equally true for SSDs and the linked to utility will also work for SSDs.
