    How To Fix 100% Disk 0 Usage When Most Fixes Have Not Worked?


    Task manager reports about 50 -60% disk usage.
    But 'performance' reports 100% on disk 0.

    And the computer is very slow. Very slow on loading and operating browsers.

    And very slow with system processes. I mean like the search bar, entry field. Sometimes I can't write anything in it. Other times it suddenly shows what I wrote a little while ago and then won't let me change it, won't let me backspace for instance.

    And other funny things. Let's just say there's something wrong.

    So I have disabled Prefetch and Windows Search. I've updated drivers. I've set memory allocation to recommend for min and 1.5 x available RAM for max.

    Any recommendations?

    While in task manager, did you note who the offenders were?

    If you have files backed up the best option is often a clean install:

    Clean Install Windows 10 | Tutorials

    If files are not backed up and there is an old system restore point that predates the problems it may fix the problems.

    System Restore Windows 10 | Tutorials

    If there are no restore points and you prefer to troubleshoot you can perform an in place upgrade repair:

    Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade | Tutorials

    Then if there are still problems place the computer in clean boot:

    Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 10 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts | Tutorials

    The above are general steps and based on the results you can perform specific steps.

    Other troubleshooting options include Windows performance recorder WPR and process monitor

    If none of the above troubleshooting steps work you can reset save files and reinstall drivers and applications.

    I want to thank you for that. It's great. I'll work through it all.

    Just now no problem. I didn't see any particular offenders in task manager - I'm not sure that's possible, is it? When overall it is reporting only say 60% usage but that one particular drive is 100% ?

    Anyway what I did was go through the hoops - and working with the thing was 'going through the hoops' alright - and I uninstalled Zone Alarm.

    I hesitate to say it's totally cured but it is certainly a lot better. When I used it this morning drive 0 was hitting 100% only say 40% of the time or less. A far cry from total 100% from one end of the screen to the other...

    When idle (e.g. 3 mins after logging in and no user intervention) you should normally see zero disk activity.

    Noted you said you had disabled Windows search. That is based on a misunderstanding and should have nothing to do with your problem unless perhaps there is a disk or file system problem. Have you checked those?

    You only have 2G RAM, and have said nothing about how full your C: is or whether you are using default page file parameters. I could well expect you have paging problems - lots of excessive disk activity, slow performance.

    You need to post a screenshot of your task manager - more than one- organising columns of interest high to low by clicking on the column tab.

    Please list the programs you have installed.

    That was following a web site directions for dealing with 100% disk usage. Nothing to do with it? Interesting.

    I've run chkdsk on the disk. Check the file system - well that's what the DISM thing does/did, I believe.

    I never get 100% mem usage in Task Manager, I look at that first. I have changed the page file parameters to Min as system recommended and max as 1.5 x available RAM.

    Happy to do that but this morning the problem doesn't seem to be there. I wonder if I fixed it somehow.

    Or it might start during the day. I think that's what happens sometimes. Like yesterday I was going alright, went out for a few hours and left the computer on and when I came back it was doing 100% disk and crawling.

    I'll post a Task Manager next time it does it. If there's no next time then it's fixed and I'm happy but would just like to know what it was - and would still like to know about this snapin error.

    I needed a cmd prompt while getting that list and ran into another problem I don't think I've mentioned - that occurs down there at the search bar, too.. when I right click and select power shell it flickers into being briefly and disappears. power shell and power shell administrator, either one.

    and, as I said, if I try to write 'cmd' in the search field I can't.... something wrong.. :)

    seems to me I've got lots of MS progs that are duplicates or old versions. Perhaps you're the man to tell me about that?

    There seem just a few progs you've elected to install personally; amongst those, nothing obviously problematic. As there are only a few, a bit surprising you've so many versions of Visual C++ - which can easily happen as you install a variety of progs.

    Yep.

    I was thinking of them as two different questions.

    Though the second arose from the first, true. My thinking is that the second is more specific and may bring it's own answer from those who know it but wouldn't feel interesting in responding to this thread: a question about disk usage.

    That and the idea that perhaps the disk usage thing is perhaps soluble without any reference to MMC.

    But if the forum sees that as two identical threads or either one as not necessary I don't mind if they delete either. Or even both. As long as somehow I track down an answer.

    I think we've concluded the way forward is an in-place repair install. You lose nothing significant except for the time to do it and the need to do a subsequent update.

    As has been observed numerous times one can spend days trying to find a specific fix (which may be the right thing to do in some cases) or do this. As you have 1809, getting the iso should be easy,

    Recommended- make sure your disk image is up to date before doing that, and run Ccleaner to create space if needed beforehand.

    If you have 2 threads open on the same PC, potentially you're absorbing help in different directions using the time of two sets of people.

    yes, thanks for your help. I sure appreciate you going as far as you could. Don't worry about it. There's other people can carry the search further. I've got a couple of leads at the moment.

    It is a peculiarity of mine that I like to find answers even if they don't apply to me and/or my current situation !

    That's why I sometimes just browse forum threads.

    But I never, ever expect anyone to exert themselves on my behalf and I hope there's never been any faintest intimation in my conduct here that such might have been the case.

    I don't quite understand the reference to two threads et al. I'm customarily having two threads open on one pc absorbing 'help' ( i.e. data, information, sought or unsought ) from different directions.

    But very rarely is this in real time actually 'using the time' of two sets of people. It is generally simply my perusal of threads in everything from quora to devshed via takimag and newscientist etc..

    In context it is clear I virtually never 'use the time' of anyone for when I query scientific or quasi-scientific channels I raise queries that have catholic pertinence. This in fact is how/why forums flourish. The general application of the specific.

    Every query raised (and hopefully answered) adds to the utility of that channel and makes it a more desirable place to go to. For a search will find your particular problem there and (hopefully) a solution.

    i.e. one is not 'using' but rather together with the other they are 'building', engaged in a joint exercise. Hopefully with pleasure and good grace on both sides isn't it?

    Hence every questioner adds to the merit of the place just as much as the answerers do. And of course quite often they're the same people, sometimes under the same name and sometimes one name for asking and another for answering isn't it? In fact that latter ploy is denigrated amongst the knowledgeable as being a somewhat underhand way of increasing your own merit as an answerer.

    You get every kind on the internet don't you?

    Where in the Midlands? Nowhere near Yorkshire? I've heard England - the midlands most particularly - has gone grievously downhill and I hope it is not true. Theodore Dalrymple writes most convincingly about it, sadly.
