Too many scary beeps on booting

I'm emerging from a bad experience that caused me to reinstall W10. I lost most of my programs and am beginning to reinstall them. W10 now boots fine and got rid of the problems that I was having. But some scary differences have appeared.

    • During reboot I get some beeps never before heard. One beep - pause - then two beeps.
    • the ACER splash screen and the BIOS enter screen no longer appears.

I can continue to hope for the best and continue reinstalling programs, but I think that something is wrong.

How can I diagnose or get rid of these scary beeps and get my (press f10 for BIOS) flash back? I think that my worries are justified and I don't want to reinstall all of my programs only to determine that it was futile.

I don't know the exact model of your PC, but that beep code on an Acer PC suggests that there is something wrong with the chipset, most likely the video section. That might explain why you don't see the splash screen and BIOS screen anymore. It might be worth having the machine looked at by a tech to see if anything can be done.

Thanks for the advice. But the reason for posting here is to avoid needing to disassemble my box and to carry it to a professional.

Does anyone have a self-help advice??

A simple check would be to remove the PC cover and check that all cables (signal & power) are firmly secured and that memory cards and other cards (e.g. GPU) are secure. Check the separate power supply cables to the GPU are properly fastened.

The beeps are post codes. It means that there is a problem.

You will have to take it someplace that does computer diagnostics. Video can be a bad cable connecting your computer to the display device.

I've looked at the post codes and don't know which BIOS that I have. During post I get the beeps but no ACER splash screen or the key stroke to enter bios. W10 loads normally and I have no problems working within the OS.

How can I find what BIOS i have? There used to be a command, sysinfo I think, that would return pages of information about your computer. How do I get to that function now to learn what my BIOS is so that I can decipher the beeps? Also, isn't there an "event log" somewhere that may help id things are going awry?

Not for hardware issues at the Bios level. You have a video problem.

To view information about the BIOS:

Open administrative powershell and type or copy and paste these commands: (some will work with admin command prompt)
    1) systeminfo > scroll to row displaying BIOS version
    2) systeminfo | findstr /i /c:bios
    3) get-wmiobject win32_bios

The option that has the most detailed information is to look in the registry with command: regedit

hkey local machine > hardware > description > bios > view the right pane

To view details on the computer: Speecy
