    Sleep/shutdown out of sync

I have set my Dell to turn off - NEVER (obviously until I manually shut down) I have the screen set to turn off after 5 minutes. Lately I notice that it seems to shut down in spite of this setting. Then when I press the power button to turn it back on, nothing happens. Then I notice the lit keyboard is lit and then the login screen comes up. I log on but I don't think this is the proper sequence of events, is it? Thanks again for any thoughts.

Run powercfg /systemsleepdiagnostics and powercfg /sleepstudy from cmd.exe. Make sure that you run those reports in your My Documents folder C:\Users\USERNAME\My Documents (replace username with your username).

To clarify - I open the cmd line while the C: is running - as in your description shown below?

    C:\Users\USERNAME\My Documents

    Thanks.

I went to the lines as you directed - when I open documents in c: users my documents - and open the cmd window, I post the info as you have said (sleep study line), IT says: it is not a valid parameter. I am really lost when some of these fixes are presented. I am a long time pc user but really mostly for photoshop stuff, and everyday uses. email, some excel etc, but not very good at getting under the hood as they say. If this out of sync situation continues, while annoying, hopefully it won't harm the system. Thanks for your input.

I can help with how to enter those commands [but not particularly with interpreting the results - my own use of such results is very haphazard].

The commands need elevated cmd or PowerShell windows. So right-click on your Start menu and select [whichever is there, which depends on how you have set your computer up]
    Command prompt [Admin]
    or
    Windows PowerShell [Admin]

Then enter [choosing your own folder path instead of mine but keeping the .html file extension]
    Code:
    powercfg /systemsleepdiagnostics /output "D:\Desktop\SystemSleepDiagnostics.html"
and then this when you have checked the first has worked correctly
    Code:
    powercfg /sleepstudy /output "D:\Desktop\SystemPowerReport.html"
    Notes
1 You can also choose your own filename but I use the ones shown because those are the titles used within the output files
2 The "quotation marks" are only needed if the path or filename contain any spaces
3 If you do not use the /output syntax, the file will be saved in C:\WINDOWS\system32\
4 The link https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...ion_sleepstudy gives you more info about how to use the commands

When you have these reports, you might find it best to post them so that somebody knowledgeable can take a look. I would suggest that you check the symptoms because I was not quire sure what you were describing
    - when you find it in the bad condition & before you press anything, it is actually still running but unresponsive or is it really off? If it is on a network, can the other computers still see it?
    - If the problem is so predictable that you can catch it within an hour of its occurrence then use Event viewer [%windir%\system32\eventvwr.msc /s] and look through its errors & warnings for the last hour [as shown on its opening screen]. Any more than an hour and you can get swamped with data.

It might be best to create a new question with an explanatory title such as Computer unresponsive, SleepDiagnostics reports posted
    - You can add the report files to your question using the icon on the editing toolbar [the picture icon, two places to the right of the hyperlink icon - it works for other file types as well as pictures].
    - Include a hyperlink to this thread in case anybody needs to check backwards [www.tenforums.com/performance-maintenance/125862-sleep-shutdown-out-sync.html].

Personally, whenever I am faced with something related to problems after the display is turned on/off, I download another copy of the display driver from the computer/display maker and reinstall it. I also check for any BIOS updates because the BIOS & hardware are much more closely intertwined with Windows 10 than they used to be, apparently.

I am sorry that I cannot be any direct help with the problem itself. I only looked at this thread because two of my older computers have frequent problems if I allow their displays to be turned off. I have set both their power options to Turn off display- Never and they behave themselves now but I have never investigated the problem properly.

    Best of luck,
    Denis

I'm just so NOT a tech person but I will give all a try. It seems to have stopped the shutdown out of sync routine. The screen turns off as I have set up in settings and the power has stayed on for the last few days. I went in and reset all of it in "settings" so maybe that triggered something. Again, thanks so much for your input. I really appreciate it.
