Windows needs to scan your drive and repair

Often when I plug in media this message comes up and invariably when I follow it's advice it ends up in tears. Not once have I need to scan and repair for the filesystem on the media to be read without issue. So why on earth is windows 10 posting this message. I've come across many user who are not tech savvy and also fall foul of this idiotic message only for all their data to be corrupted and lost.

Hi, can I assume that's a comment, as there's no question there?

If you wish to criticise MS for some Windows behaviour, please note this forum is NOT run by MS but by users.

If you wish to provide feedback to MS, I suggest you use the Feedback Hub app, part of Windows, or post on a site run by MS.

Ok, thanks.. as you might guess, Windows has detected a problem with the file system on the disk and is going to run chkdsk to try to repair the file system.

It's not something I see when plugging in USB disks; this article may help to explain it.
(If you simply search using your error message you will find such things as I have).

Do you always make sure you use Safely Remove before unplugging USB disks?

The reason is simple when windows start it writes a dirty bit to the hd when it shuts down it clears the bit. If the bit isn't cleared by bad shut down or crash windows sees the drive is dirty and envokes chkdsk

If I use a usb flash drive on an Android or Linux system and then plug it into my Windows 10 system, I will get this same warning. I have noticed they add a file to the usb that windows does not like. I let windows scan and repair it and I don't lose any files. If you share the drive with other operating systems this could be the problem.

Are you choosing to "Eject" the drive in the OS before removing the device, or just physically unplugging it? Also how long have you had this or these flash drives and where did you get them? Cheap ones can fail, along with ones that are used a lot. Not ejecting them or another OS writing to the Partition table and Windows does not like it (especially ext4 drives).

Thanks Dalchina some very useful links there.

Thank guys. I can't be sure but I believe the users who came to me with these issues most likely wouldn't have removed their USBs correctly as they are not particularly IT literate. What worries me is both individuals suffered total corruption of their files resulting in an unreadable USB by the OS. Equally it could be the use of a cheap piece of media which contributed to their failure. On one isolated occasion a piece of media which was readable was rendered unreadable after the user followed the offer to scan! I will in future keep a closer eye on this, thanks again.
