Samsung SSD Rapid Mode 0 On or Off?

I just added a 500GB Samsung 860 EVO SSD to my laptop replacing a 5400RPM 640Gb SATAII HDD. Very nice performance boost. I then installed Samsung Magician to check it out and found the firmware was down level so I updated it to the latest. Also noticed that Rapid Mode was Off. I have the same drive in my Lenovo K450 and there I have Rapid Mode On.

I ran the Samsung Magician performance test and the numbers were pretty low on the laptop. I then turned on Rapid Mode, rebooted and ran it again and the performance numbers increased dramatically.

My non-empirical test results tell me Rapid Mode should be on, as long as I have the RAM available to support it as it can suck up to 4GB. Here are the numbers from before and after:

These are with Rapid Mode OFF. I captured this while the 2nd test with Rapid Mode on was running which is why you see it sitting at 92%.

I have an EVO 850 and found a similar improvement.

Rapid mode inserted the following log-on program:
    Attachment 220546
    Also this service:
    Attachment 220547
    These disk filter drivers:
    Attachment 220548
    Attachment 220549

Please post how you fare with Rapid mode enabled. I've turned it off for now in the interests of system stability

I dont use rapid mode on my older machine with an 860. I uses a small amount of RAM.

    I find it fast enough.

Is that SATA or M.2/NVMe drive ? Rapid mode works only for SATA drives.

I'd be interested to see 'real world' performance tests between the two. Boot up, Application loading, Transcoding, Editing operations etc.

Well, a quick search turns up some useful articles:

Samsung Magician 4.5 RAPID Mode Evaluated With Demonstrated Speed Increase | The SSD Review

850 Evo SSD with Rapid Mode - PC Gaming - Toms Hardware

Negligible or no real world benefit. Possibly slower in some scenarios. Possible instability.

I had also looked into Rapid Mode after I bought my first one. I tried it and yes the Benchmark looks impressive, but after using it for week or so, I did not notice any performance boost. I have 3 other Samsung SSD's, they all have Rapid Mode OFF.

Rapid Mode works only for sequential reading on large, continuous files, practically useless for normal operation.

It's the standard sata 3 version.

I've had Rapid mode enabled on my Lenovo K450 since I installed the SSD. It's written about 6.6TB of data thus far with zero instability and the performance has been very good. I can't "prove" anything but it makes me feel better so I'll leave it on
