Does my SSD Need Over Provisioning? Western Digital Blue 250GB

    Hi All

    Windows 10 Pro x64
    Western Digital Blue 250GB
    1TB Toshiba storage drive

SSD added myself over a year ago to my new G11CD-K, briefly used SSD in my old AMD FX 8310 8 Core Desktop, til decided to upgrade to newer system

Anyways Don't see any option for setting up over provisioning in WD's software

Why do you think you need to over-provision?

Just Heard about it for other SSD's, so wasn't sure if mine needed it or not--reason why i decided to ask this question

    Hi.

From my experience, over provisioning was best used on earlier generation SSD drives that had cells which wore unevenly.
I suggest not using it, since this drive has automatic "Garbage Collection" built-in and firmware which is state-of-the-art now.

One trick to manually invoke the Garbage Collection routine is to reboot your system to the BIOS but don't enter it.
At that stage in the boot cycle, power is provided to the SSD but is not being accessed. Leave it that way for 15 minutes for the routine to silently "kick-in" then escape and reboot.

    That's it.

Ok can do that then, i'll boot that into the bios later on... So i just enter the bios, but don't touch anything, and leave it that way for 15 minutes, as it boots up so fast, sometimes even miss the bios enter button lol

    Simple enough sounds like
(Probably wouldn't hurt to do same steps on the other laptop machine with 128GB Samsung SSD that Magician doesn't support lol) Laptops hardly ever idle that long, but will work on it that later on as well

As for data files--all stored on Secondary drive D, including Onedrive lol, Windows Indexing off/search off, System restore set very low, and System images done with Macirum monthly

    Additionally...

You can also use Defragment and Optimize Drives under Windows Administrative Tools.
It will not defrag your SSD - no worries.

Some SSD manufacturer's have their own software for doing this. If so, go with theirs.
It's just invoking the TRIM command, anyway.

    Have fun!
