I'm a self-employed computer geek and over 20 years of doing this stuff, I have plenty of customers out there. This past week my phone started ringing off the hook about slow computers that had maxed out CPU's.

My first thought that considering how wide-spread this issue was, that it had to be a Microsoft update as one was pushed out this past week. It still might be part of the problem, but only as a trigger.

What I found out is that the problem was an expired anti-virus.....in this case it was Webroot as that's what I put on all my machines. Uninstalling it fixed the problem.

I use AMD exclusively, and it could be the combination of that brand processor, an OS update, and expired anti-virus. It's a guess........but can safely say uninstalling the anti-virus fixed it. Reloading an unexpired A/V did not bring the issue back.
    Hello,

I work on Webroot's Community team. Would you mind reaching out to me so we can get more information about this issue? We're looking to troubleshoot further and need to figure out if the keycode has certain criteria.

Please reach out to me at lliddell@webroot.com.
