    Not enough space

Hi to all...I have 2 drives in my computer and the C drive is nearly full, it has a capacity of 117gb, my D drive capacity is 911gb. I have just reinstalled windows and a few other progs and it is nearly full only 19gb free now, while the D drive is just about empty. can I somehow put the program files onto D, in fact I am open to suggestions please.

Windows "and a few programs" shouldn't take up more than 30 or 40 GB, so I'm unclear why it's taken nearly 100 in your case.

Did you intend to do a "clean install" and delete ALL partitions during the installation?

Do you have a Windows.old folder? If you do, then I don't think you did a clean install. That would contain your old Windows installation, which you may or may not want or need.

Barring some very unusual situation, you shouldn't have to put any programs on D, but you should be able to reduce the size of what's on C--possibly by starting over again and doing a clean install.

Do you deliberately keep your personal data files on C?

What is the purpose of D?

In the case you installed over last Windows, run Disk cleaner, assuming you have the latest Windows 10 (1803 or 1809) you can do this from settings:

Settings / system /storage... click on C., wait for analysis and remove Temporary files and any other files (Don't check Downloads)

Tenforums tutorials | Delete Temporary Files in Windows 10

As for D drive... best thing is to move Documents, pictures and Downloads to D:

Tenforums tutorials | Documents Folder - Move Location in Windows 10

This is for Documents, repeat for other User folders

Edit: one other thing to do. Install some disk space analyzer, like Treesize free, to see where did the space go..

Thanksfor the replies,,,I have not got a windows old file and I got rid of the temp etc as you suggested and have moved the docs, music, downloads to D, but it has not made much difference.
Do you think that it would be possible to reinstall windows to the D drive, as I don't really use the D drive?.

If you don't need D, you can delete it and add that recovered space to C.

Is there anything--ANYTHING--on D that you need? I'm assuming you can move that stuff back to C temporarily so that D is empty.

I'm assuming C and D are simply partitions on the same drive, which would be common on an HP laptop.

It makes little sense to have a D unless it's being used for some purpose. From what you've said, it has no particular purpose.

It would be helpful if you can post a screenshot of your partitions, and like this from (e.g.) Wiztree as mentioned above. Otherwise we're limited to blind guessing and generalisations. Thanks!

When you clean installed Windows, did you follow this:
Clean Install Windows 10 | Tutorials
    - in particular deleting existing partitions at step 13?

It is often possible to specify that programs be installed on D: as part of the installation process. However that does not guarantee most of the files related to such programs are on D: - programs of any complexity usually create folders in special areas on C:

Note that some experience real difficulty if they relocate folders (Location tab) as it is so easy to make dreadful mistakes. So whilst it's a great idea to keep personal data on a disk/partition separate from the OS, my preference is not to use the default library folders to do so.

Thanks - partitions look fine. If you examine the cushion map at the bottom of Wiztree, that will show anything large. Make sure you follow clean-up advice above. dmp files can sometimes be large- they would show up in the cushion map.

You could save space by disabling hibernation, if enabled (and fast startup).

You could clone the SSD to your HDD and use that, I guess - best get advice from someone familiar with desktops.

Or you could examine Steam's use of space and any games, and if significant, try installing Steam and games on D:

For interest (?) I have hundreds of progs installed, several office suites... and here's mine - 256Gb SSD + 1Tb HDD:
