No options to turn OFF adaptive brightness / no power slider

    Hello everyone!

I'm stuck with a very weird problem I can't solve. I'm not a full-on reading binary style tech person but I'm using computers (and fix their problems) since forever and never ran against a wall like this:

My Dell M3800 laptop turned on the adaptive brightness feature again that I disabled almost three years ago. Now it's pretty much useless in dim environments because the screen gets so dark. Also every option windows normally has to switch it off is gone. Not greyed out, it's just not there (Both in the legacy power options and in te new UI).

Around the same time it happend that windows decided to get rid of the old power profiles and instead only show the "balanced" one that comes with the power options slider when you click on the battery icon in the tray. I had that briefly and then the slider disappeard along with the option of turning adaptive brightness OFF.

    This makes me MAD.
    • I deleted and restored the default power plans in several ways
    • I changed all (all I found, though) corresponding registry entries to disable adaptive brightness
    • I checked the registry for the the option to show the switching-option being ENABLED
    • I even stopped the windows service for the ambient light sensor

    No change. Any Wizards around?

What video card do you have? Try going back to an older driver. That has worked for some other people.

Intel HD Graphics 4600 -- I'll try this, thanks.

    Edit: Didn't change it.

What version of Windows 10? Enter winver in a Run box to see? For instance, I have Windows 10 Pro at Version 1809 (OS Build 17763.134).

    Have you seen this?

    Windows 10 1809 - Missing Display Options

It links to a tenforums tutorial on how to disable adaptive brightness from a command prompt.

How could I have missed that?!

Option TWO actually worked for me!

    THANKS A LOT!

Although I'm really puzzled that this is supposed to be like that now? I mean... What are they thinking?
Anyhow... It's a stupid workaround but at least I can use the laptop again!

This is only temporary as at some future Bootup that overrides the Intel Profile you have set, and you can get it changing to 50% on starting, and/or the adaptive varying brightness with content starts up again.
This is particularly bad in version 1809.

I don't know a permanent answer, everything seems to be just a temporary fix for the two dimming scenarios.

Glad you at least have a usable laptop again. Maybe they'll fix it in a future update.

I'm sorry to bring this very old thread back but unfortunately it was never fixed in recent updates for 1809 made in year 2020, not even with updates like KB4549949, KB4550969 & KB4551853

edit May 22 - I take most of what I said back - the problem was fixed in at least the KB4469342 update but it seems in my situation, the "BrightnessReset" task from Task Scheduler pretty much undid the fix [only occurs when upgrading from 1703 to 1809] - I deleted that task and rebooted and the brightness level is retained and no longer reset
