Windows takes an inordinate amount of time to start up/restart/resume

    HP desktop i7-6700 CPU @ 3.40GHz 3.41GHz 16GB RAM Win 10 Home

While this computer has a good amount of RAM, it goes from restart to "severely congested/slow to resumefrom sleep" fairly quickly (a couple of days).

Now I admit that my practice of keeping several workspaces open, each with one or several instances of Opera and Firefox, each of which has multiple tabs (which I find very convenient) uses a lot of this RAM, it is now much worse than it used to be. Also the computer normally is used several hours daily.

Is this likely caused by a need to defrag? (I have not been doing it because I have had in mind that Win 10 does not need defragging?) But if so, how often should a defrag be done?

Or is it likely sole due to my practice described above, or something else? What can I do to gather helpful information on this? Thanks.

Make sure to install all latest device drivers and disable startup programs that you don't want.

Defragmenting hard disk drive can boost speed of file access.

Windows 10 has a scheduled Defrag task. I checked and mine last ran successfully 11/14/2018. I can't figure out how often it's supposed to run by looking at the scheduled task but it obviously runs on a regular basis.

A fragmented disk would not cause this kind of problem in any case.

If you open Task Manager then click on Performance tab then Memory, what does it look like?
Open Resource Monitor then RAM. Sort by Working Set. What does that look like?

    Hi @Odysseus

    1. Download and Install windows Performance Toolkit https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...ed/adk-install . Choose the package corresponding to your Windows version.
    2. Just install the "Windows Performance Toolkit" package.
    3. Record a trace using Windows Performance Recorder using these options: https://justpaste.it/1g4sx
    4. Compress the resulting file (very important)
    5. Share it through https://www.transfernow.net/en/ or any other file sharing platform.

I'llanalyze your trace file and give you a feedback.

I would be careful in disabling "un-needed" services and/or programs -- unless you know exactly how Windows would be affected by the absence of any said service or program -- disabling could lead to more problems than such would solve. Disclaimer, I'm a Windows 7 person, and I realize Windows 10 is not the same as Windows 7, it has been my choice to leave Windows 7 services and programs mostly un-tweaked and alone.
