Just to clarify, at what point did you check the temps- just after a new startup, just after a crash and reboot or some other time?

I had the PC running for awhile and then checked. It had not shutdown before that.

I should clarify that in order for the hard drive to be turned off after the screen goes black, I have to hold the power button in.

Maybe I should be looking at a monitor issue too?

That doesn't sound like a thermal shutdown- but do try monitoring temps to eliminate that.
If not, could be anything from hardware to software.

Meanwhile, please do an absolutely basic check- quick and simple- just to eliminate the most elementary- download and install Hard disk sentinel (trial) and post a screenshot of its GUI.

This gives a great summary of your disks.

Then run checks on your RAM

Sorry I was done for the night before I saw your last post. I’ll work on this today. Thanks

    Here's the first log.

Edit: No errors on MemoryDiagnostics test.

I'll run the other test overnight tonight. It sounds like it takes a long time to run.

Ok I ran the Memtest and after 8 passes it showed no errors.

What else do you recommend I check?

    Disk, RAM ok - good.

Is this simply a 'random' sleep problem - often reported?

Once the screen goes dark and the disk off, can you get it to resume?

Conversely, is what you see the same if you make it sleep manually?

I actually have it set to never turn off. It hasn’t happened since I’ve started the testing so I will let you know more when it does it again.
Pressing keys does nothing so I don’t think it’s going into sleep.

If I hold the PC power button down it shuts off and I can start up the computer again normally, but a few minutes later it will do the same thing.

Try manually putting it to sleep (sounds cosy somehow) - then see if you can wake it.

Note the time your PC goes into "black screen mode"

Then look at your event log and see if there's an event 42 about then.

Do I just go into power options to change manually or is there a keyboard shortcut?

Where in event viewer do I check? That viewer is so busy it overwhelms me!

An easy way to see your events is to use Fulleventlogview by Nirsoft (easy to find, free).

This simply provides a linear list of all, which you can organise by clicking on column headings, and search, filter etc. It takes a couple of mins to load.

Thus you can organise by event id, and simply scroll down or search for 42, and see
    a. if there were any b. when they occurred.

To put your PC to sleep you should be able to e.g.
