Can anyone help with extremely slow load and operation of some progs?

This is my partner's computer (my best guess is 5+ years old)

Windows 10 Desktop Dell Intel RCore I3 CPU 530 at 2.93GHzInstalled memory Ram 3.00GB2.7GB usableSystem Type 64BitX64 Base Processor

The computer is VERY slow to start -up from switch on to usable 5 mins approx?

Word is very slow to load and then not responding
GIMP can just about work with it but on a big file unable to save - 'Not responding' and doesn't save...

Other programmes may also have problems but these are the main two that are used.

    Start button won't shutdown
CTL -ALT-DEL where shutdown blue screen and spinning which doesn't seem to shutdown after 30 mins or so... only way to shutdown is via on/off button on base unit.

    Help anyone?

Slow boot analysis can be done using the Windows Performance Recorder (a number of threads demonstrate that- technical analysis of trace needed). To find those just search the forum for- yes- Windows Performance Recorder.

However, before that, given the other problems you report, let's do some more basic checks.

What is your Windows build? Windows key + R, winver

    Your disk and file system:

    1. First check your disk(s):
Download and run Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) (includes SSDs)
Post a screenshot of its GUI using the Insert Image icon above your post.
If all disks are reported as good, continue.

    2. Now check your file system:

From an admin command or powershell prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
    chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:
Read Chkdsk Log in Event Viewer in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials
    or
How to read Event Viewer log for Chkdsk in Windows 10 [Tip] | dotTech

To post a screenshot please use the Insert Image icon above your post.

If the above are ok, then please run
    SFC /SCANNOW
from an admin command or powershell promptand report the result.

    ====================================
Idle resource use - is your PC busy? With your PC nominally idle, please post a screenshot of your task manager, showing any screens of interest. Organise columns high to low by clicking on the appropriate column header.

I note you say you have 3Gb RAM, so this is presumably an older PC; you may have RAM and page file constraints.

Can you update you PC specs on your profile.

All we know is you have a Dell with 3GB RAM and you say that GIMP is slow to work.

Do you have a old PC connected to a superfast SAN? Or a tablet you got from the supermarket last week with 32GB emmc storage? Apart from RAM; CPU and disk space (and type) will impact performance significantly so it is important to know these details in as much detail as you can provide.

If you unsure then give the model number (if there is one).

    Trying chkdsk and get

C:\Users\sandrax>chkdsk c;/fAccess Denied as you do not have sufficient privileges orthe disk may be locked by another process. You have to invoke this utility running in elevated modeand make sure the disk is unlocked.C:\Users\Sandra>

Ok - right-click and run as admin...

    Yep

Do upload you computer specs though as chkdsk can take hours and I don't see any articular reason to run it yet (although it will not harm anything if you do).

Given the variety of issues, need to establish the disk is ok. First thing is not chkdsk, but as I said, to verify your disk is not failing. Hence Hard disk sentinel first, as its GUI gives an excellent report.

It's no good trying to fix Windows if the hardware is problematic.

Think of repairing a house on a collapsing coal mine.

Ran Malware Bytes - two quarantined - problems persist
Downloaded Sentinel - when installing one of the tick boxes was 'launch when finished installing' - and it didn't launch.

I have tried running the Hard Disk Sentinel and a timer icon runs and looks like it is working but nothing then gets displayed. I have run this on my own computer and it works fine.
