Thanks for the advice above.
I am waiting for the scans to be done of the external drives.
The computer was left to shutdown on its own when we went to bed last night - 20 mins plus but it did shut down on its own at some point.
Can anyone help with extremely slow load and operation of some progs?

Thanks for the clear disk list.
You appear to have a lot of USB drives connected.. whilst diagnosing performance, can these be disconnected?

Apologies for the delay (life).
Have had some 'success'.
1. Left the pc 'overnight' and it eventually shutdown on its own. (this improved loading slightly)
2. Removed/cleaned up storage (didn't notice any improvement - but it may have helped)
3. Removed unwanted programmes - including BitDefender (after this was removed one photo programme then loaded)
4. Word doesn't work to start with but then does after a few minutes - if clicking before the flashing 'icon/bar' the Word will crash
5. Most programmes seem to work eventually - ie wait a few minutes - Photoshop opens no problem
Word is 2007!
6. Also ran CC Cleaner but didn't notice any improvement
7. Before above - removed external drives and the computer was still mega slow.

Purely pragmatically, + the figure for RAM occupancy in your previous screenshots, and comment made above about RAM, you could be struggling because of paging problems- insufficient RAM- so loading a big prog means your PC is swapping things between disk and RAM.Most programmes seem to work eventually - ie wait a few minutes
Try this: open task manager like this:
Then launch Photoshop
Watch RAM use and disk activity.. take a screenshot.
Another thing to try- check the max transfer rate achieved by the disk.
Check your page file settings. Are they default?

Thanks, nothing abnormal about that (if the page file had been restricted to too small a size, this could cause problems if you have a RAM limitation).
Now let's see what happens to RAM and disk use when you launch a prog.. oh, and your disk transfer rate.

Yep - a great deal of paging going on- 100% RAM use.
More RAM.. and if your PC supports dual channel and you've only 1 RAM stick, you'll benefit there too by adding a second.
