Thanks for the replies. margrave55, Yes. I'm obsessed with stopping the things I don't need or use. It makes the things I do use work better. Since I started this crusade I've improved my performance considerably, and that's my goal, to have the OS as freed up as possible.

MeAndMyComputer, I did get the computer about a week ago and did a full reinstall of the OS (the longer process). It is the Asus machine you show. ET Pro is not running in the background, startups are at a minimum, OneDrive is already disabled, windows defender(?) I think is the security package, I uninstalled that McAfee bundled program immediately.

Thank you eLPuSHeR for the RAM explanation.

Thanks Eagle51 for that PowerRun information. I will give that a try.

Since you got rid of McAfee Windows Defender should be your security package by default. There's more than one way to find out but let's check the big picture by getting into the Viewing the security dashboard.

Select the Show hidden icons in the lower right corner of your taskbar.
Right click the Windows Defender icon: hopefully it will have a green check on it but could be yellow.
Left click on View security dashboard.
You will now see Security at a glance.

Perfect. Windows Defender is the program in charge of security. Everything is green except for "Account Protection, Sign into microsoft for enhanced security". Definitely not concerned with the warning message. Microsoft loves to scare people into turning stuff on.

Overall the machine runs well. I don't think I'll do anything else unless I find a way to disable Edge just for giggles. I've never crashed windows 10 yet, so it might be a fun experiment. I have backup machines and all my data is saved in about 5 places.

Just a shot in the dark, but one question about Edge. When I search for things in the start menu, and the search directs me to "see web results", the browser the results open in is Edge. Very frustrating since I have Chrome designated as my default browser. Those web results should be displayed in Chrome, not Edge. But microsoft slams me again and forces me to use their browser.

Anyone know of a way to make those those results open in the browser I designated as my default, or does microsoft have a stranglehold on me again?

    You might try
    Download EdgeDeflector 1.1.3.0

And of course another approach is to use the Open shell (née Classic Shell) start menu- where you can select search options, and its internet search opens in your default browser correctly. Favoured by many here- and a lot more flexible and user friendly than Win 10's start menu.

"Everything is green except for "Account Protection, Sign into microsoft for enhanced security".
--- You can dismiss that if you wish.

"find a way to disable Edge"
--- I've seen recommendations that indicate it's possible but I wouldn't bother as it's part of Windows 10 OS.
--- You'd probably would be spending extra time and effort taking up and trying to maintain that effort.

"When I search for things in the start menu, and the search directs me to "see web results", the browser the results open in is Edge. Very frustrating since I have Chrome designated as my default browser. Those web results should be displayed in Chrome, not Edge."
--- If you search for things in the Start menu, it will use Edge.
It sounds to me like you are using Chrome as your default browser.
--- I don't use Chrome but I have friends who do.
--- They tell me they use Chrome for just about everything w/o interference from Edge.
--- Some of them have also told me they use Edge once in a while to ensure WU's are up-to-date.
--- The next time I see a computer using Chrome, I'm going to see if Microsoft's Windows Defender is still the security package: I suspect Chrome has it's own security measures and if I was using Chrome I'd be investigating that.

EDIT: I was looking up information about Google Chrome and I found this
Users Forcibly Being Logged Into Chrome When Signing Into a Google Service
    https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/new...oogle-service/
"With the release of Chrome 69, it was discovered that when you log into your Google account, or any Google service for that matter, you will also be automatically logged into Chrome whether you want to or not."
--- And there are pros & cons mentioned.
So that tells me Microsoft Edge isn't the only culprit of trying to manage us within their system.

Edge deflector, awesome!!!! I will install that as soon as I log out of etrade pro this afternoon.

I figured that security warning was nothing to worry about since it was basically a link to sign into microsoft. All the important stuff in Defender is green. I unhid the icon so I can always keep my eye on it should anything trigger a warning there.

As for Chrome, thanks MeAndMyComp for that explanation. I never actually signed into Chrome or synced it, so it doesn't log me in when I use google. This browser situation reminds me of a gang turf war in the Bronx. LOL

How would I check Chrome to see if Defender is the security package? I've gone over the "Privacy and Security" section in Chrome settings and it's just basic features listed, nothing about Defender.

Great help here folks. I really appreciate all the replies.

I was glad to see Dalchina's mention about Edge deflector also as it's a reasonable option to consider and I just wouldn't want to experiment on how to disable Edge.

Since Google Chrome isn't your default browser then most likely Edge is unless you've got something else going we don't know about. I also use Google plus have a gmail account but do not use Google Chrome.
--- If you do not use a security package of your own, Windows Defender is used by default.

In case you are interested, even though I use Edge as my default browser, I use DuckDuckGo as my search engine.

I don't recommend fiddling with Services unless you really understand what you are doing - I doubt Black Viper does.

Use Autoruns to check what third party startup programs / services / tasks etc are loading and disable or uninstall the bloatware you don't need. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sys...loads/autoruns

Consider installing a SSD in your laptop if you don't already have one.

Thank you Steve, I've already mirrored B.V's list and everything is fine. Remember, my usage is not intensive. XP and Ubuntu/Linux were fine for me up until now. Recently XP started glitching my trading program and it doesn't run on Linux. I've gotten it to run through Wine on Linux, but it doesn't run the latest version and it needs to DL the entire program every time it starts. I will give that autorun a look, thanks for the link.

Dalchina, Edge Deflector works great, thank you!
