It's not XP To be honest I find a lot of the latest Linux Distros too big and flashy as well now! Gone are the days when you could fit one on a 4GB Eee Pc - I used to use Bodhi Linux for that and it's up to 5GB.

Dunno about resources but it's quite easy to set W10 up how you want and keep it simple. I uninstalled any apps I didn't want (there weren't that many installed on first set up). I removed most of the icons in the start menu apart from news and weather and added links to - control panel, calculator, Word onscreen keyboard. Then just use files and internet!

I have Windows 10 dual booted with Xubuntu (maybe more like XP?)

I tried a bunch of Linux distros, including Xubuntu. The only one I didn't have one problem or another with is Lubuntu. I have it dual booted with XP. I think it's only about 700MB, and it's similar to XP in a lot of ways. I'd use it exclusively if I could get it to run my damn trading software. I unsuccessfully tried to launch it from Java because etrade supports that option, but they don't support Linux. It runs in Wine but it doesn't update when I install it, so it's running whatever version came in the download originally. Then it has to reinstall the entire program every time it starts.

Anyway, the Asus computer I was tweaking during this thread had a slight hindrance last night. I won't go into details because it's one ridiculous situation after another. But I did find out that if you punch an Asus x540l as hard as possible while it's running.....it doesn't turn off!!!! I was in the bios screen when that happened. It needs to be flung hard at the floor before it shuts down. Weird. LMAO

So I ordered a new HP Pavilion widescreen. No b/s-ing around with this one. I'm running W10 through NTLite before I use the machine. I'm sure I'll start another thread about that when the time comes.

Thanks TZ. I will add those to my arsenal of links. I used NLite for years on XP and loved everything about it. Took me some time to get my personal version perfected, but once I did, I really enjoyed reformatting. The whole process took me about 2 hours, including the downloading of the windows updates and program installation.

Hoping I can have a similar experience with NTLite.

My preferred Linux distro is Bodhi linux (version 4). Not a bit like XP but just works and very fast and light and simple. Comes with very little software and you choose from a basic app store which browser etc you want. Love it. Xubuntu is more conventional though Those are the two I tend to stick with dual boot. Bodhi 5 is the latest but not quite there as very new. Bodhi 4 is long term support and just works.

    Actually that's spot on topic.

I got it running on the Asus 540, but when I described the computer's demise a few posts ago, it wasn't a joke.

Some of the keys on the kbd stopped working. So in the process of attempting to proceed like a normal f---ing human being and do the simple things I know from using XP for.....whenever it came out until now..... I ran into one problem after another, mostly windows telling me I can't do what I want to do. Then I tried to boot from Parted Magic boot disc, but needed to change boot order....finally figured out how to get into my bios screen.......dvd drive not showing in bios..... Mind you, all this time I'm looking online for ways around the restrictions, doing all this unnecessary crap W10 demands just to delete a damn keyboard driver, take ownership, etc. So when the several solutions I researched for the DVD not showing in bios failed, the computer met my fist, several times, then it met the floor, then the HD met a hammer.

New computer on the way. HP Pavilion 17.3" loaded. So that should be fun.

Now, this is off topic, but how much of this W10 BS can I avoid if I use windows 7 instead? My OS experience consists of XP and Linux. Everything after XP is new to me. So I just want stuff to function as close to XP as possible, when need to work on the system especially.

Win 7 = no apps, no Store, no Cortana, no tiled Start menu, no Action Centre, no Settings.
Those I guess are the most obvious things.

Of those I only use the last 2, which are necessary. A Start menu replacement (Open Shell -née Classic Shell) resolves start menu issues.

Win 7 adds 'better' icons (my opinion) and Aeroglass.
Both are achievable in Win 10 via 3rd party progs.

Win 7 allows more GUI tweaks. Some of these can be done in Win 10 reasonably easily. (A handy dialogue was removed in Win 8).

Most significant: Win 10 has a moving specification- changes 6 monthly. Win 7's is fixed.
Relate to that are issues around Windows Update, far more manageable if you have Win 10 Pro.

Win 10 updates on Home to me seem about the most trying issue.

A few people seem to get wound up about 'spying' rather excessively and obsessively, which is, I suggest, counter-productive (far more time and energy and emotional energy expended than actually being productive).

Not sure, if it is related, but if you disable this task, you will not be able to type within UWP apps.
    Code:
    schtasks /Change /TN "Microsoft\Windows\TextServicesFramework\MsCtfMonitor" /Enable
    schtasks /Run /TN "Microsoft\Windows\TextServicesFramework\MsCtfMonitor"

Tell me about it. Taming 10 is trial and error. I have disabled several Windows drivers and learnt, what some do, also that 10 wants some, even when they are not used, otherwise it refuses to boot. It is kind of a fun.

dalchina: I'm just going to use 7. The stuff you mentioned are the things I am struggling most to get rid of in 10. Wow! That's what I get for never updating my OS until almost nothing worked anymore.

Do I need to buy a key for W7?

Tairiku: Too late for that machine my friend. Starting over with 7 and going to take it from there. Thank you for the info.
