What is taking so much space?

So I checked the other day and out of my 200 GB SSD partition for Windows, only 45 GB was remaining.

I went into explorer options and enabled viewing hidden files and folders and disabled hiding system files.

Then I selected all the files in C drive and viewed it's properties, 112 GB was in use by these files but right clicking C drive itself showed 154 GB in use.

    Screenshot attached.

What is taking so much space? I am out of my wits.

When run as Administrator it lets you see inside the System Volume Information folder. That, I suspect, may be where the used space is hiding in the form of restore points. If you have 1803, then it has been observed that a restore point may be created for each Defender definitions update.

...starting 1st Aug. every day a restore point is created (Windows Modules Installer)....
    Defender update frequency normal?

If this is your problem, then deleting restore points should be the solution, and restricting the size allowed for restore points would stop it getting too large in the future. There are also some suggestions in the above thread that disabling the Windows Defender verification scheduled task stops this particular type of restore point from being created.

I've found in the past that WinDirStat doesn't show the contents of System Volume Information but TreeSize Free does.

Here they are, side by side, looking at the same C: drive. In particular, look at System Volume Information, highlighted in both. WinDirStat says it's empty, TreeSize shows the files and folders it contains.

Yes, Windirstat can also report a large unknown region. I'd like to find something with a 'cushion' style graphic that doesn't have that problem. Treesize attempts that kind of layout but unconvincingly. If labels are enabled on the 3D view, it looks very clumsy, and unlike Windirstat there are no popups if you mouse over the cushion display.

I dislike the default colour scheme, but that can be changed. At first glance looks promising.
It scans a lot faster than Windirstat.

Having played with it a little, seems really neat. Everything's sensible and it avoids the problems Windirstat seems to face.

It shows hidden files, and if you delete a file, immediately updates the display by drawing a red lin thru that file.

Disadvantage: you're limited to 13 colours (= groups of file types), and really need to add familiar file types like flac, pdf....
