My PC periodically freezes in Windows 10

    Hey Guys

I have an issue I have been so desperately trying to troubleshoot. Literally giving up soon. Please please please help if you have any ideas <3

ISSUE: My PC periodically freezes for either short bursts or needs a force shutdown.

SPECS: ASUS Rog Maximus hero mobo, i7 8700k, msi GTX1080 8gb graphics, 4x8gb corsair vengeance ram, 500gb m.2 drive (windows installed), 6tb harddrive, 750W thermaltake power

    WHAT I'VE DONE:

    - Clean install of all drivers (take them off, reinstall, update to
newest, several times). So it's not the drivers
    - Malware/spyware clean, not even one file found
    - Memory checked each ram stick
    - Cleared all temp files
    - unplugged all USB items and tried drivers again
    - Tried to run chkdsk - it comes up with an error saying it can't
    - Checked temperatures of hardware, everything is well below dangerous, no spikes, no throttling, hardware is working well from what I can see
    - entered safe mode, freezing didn't occur therefore it is not a power issue
    - also cant run chkdsk in safety mode
    - Tried to "reset my computer" and start a fresh install of windows to wipe it, comes up with error saying it can't do this no changes have been made
    - Tried to restore from previous backups, same issue as above
    - Tried to get the windows ISO on USB to "repair my pc" that way, same issue as above
    - Tried to fresh install on secondary drive with windows to test if freezes still happen, I can't due to it being in the partition of the first drive and it freezes everytime I try change it

    So... kill me? hahah

Thank so much if you have had a look

You have performed a thorough check list.
I would pursue hardware problems. That is, power supplies and connectors, cold solder joints on MOBO inputs, flaky 230V power supply cord... A loose 15 amp fuse inside the power receptacle plug.
You have to remember, "Safe Mode" would consume less power as the PC operates with the minimal of services. Cold solder joints, poor connector contacts will heat up proportional to the applied load.

I will try have a look and do that today.

Could it also be corrupt windows files? I've tried to update windows but comes up with this: updating windows error code 80073712

So it's not the most updated windows and may have corrupt files? Hmmm

Hello nycra and welcome to Ten Forums. If I may make a couple of observations:
The should be no problem running checkdisk unless there are some other problems. See if this could help you Drive Error Checking in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials

The fact that you don't get freezes in Safe Mode, is a good indication it could be a driver problem. In Safe Mode, no third party drivers are loaded. Thsoe or a combination of several of them could be what is causing the freezing.

Try running the system file checker. Open an elevated command prompt and run sfc /scannow (notice the space between the sfc and the / )

You could also try running a clean boot and enabling just a couple of services at a time until you find the offending one. This will show you how.

Freezing is often a graphic card problem and nvidea has had many.
Check your Reliability History and see if the red flags relate to your card ,eg "nvlddmkm.sys".
If so,then use Display Driver Uninstall ,in safe mode,to remove all traces, then reinstall the card drivers.
You could also try using Whocrashed, from Resplendence.com,if the freezing continues, which sometimes helps with finding the offender.
Check out the nvidea site, there might be a recent article/fix.

May be hardware incompatibility. Try to replace your Nvidia with some borrowed older AMD graphics card, uninstall nvidia drivers, install amd ones & test your system response.
